My car has been sitting in my shop collecting dust since July, and I'm finally starting to get it ready to drive again. The tranny started slipping in 3rd, and I've decided to just fix it so I can drive it and worry about the ZF conversion after I've finished remodeling my house. There's a reputable local company that says they'll fix it for $450. I just took the battery in yesterday to be replaced under warranty (they have to try to charge it for 24 hours before they can replace it), and then I'll drive it to the tranny shop. After that, I need to address the low oil pressure problem. At idle, the oil pressure is way too low. I think it's my fault, because I put a low pressure spring in the pump when I put the motor together. I think the spring has gotten a bit weak. I'll be replacing the pump when I get the car back. I've been so busy with other projects that I'm not looking forward to taking the time to fix the minor things, but I know I'll be happier when they're done.
Arrrgh! The slimy plicks at the tranny shop refuse to honor the price they gave me last month. Now they want double! :mad For that kind of money, I'll do it myself. :mad
Well, I believe the reason he has that tranny available is that he just broke this supposedly "unbreakable" transmission and that's his warranty replacement. I've already broken 5 "unbreakable" 700r4's, and I don't even drive it all that hard! So now, instead of dropping major cash for another one of these "unbreakable" transmissions, I'd rather spend as little as possible to get me through until I finish with my house. It's just the 3/4 clutch pack in mine. I have the GM 700R4 service manual, and it doesn't look like rocket science. The shops just charge as if it were. I figure if I can build an engine, I can build a tranny.
definately give it a shot doing it yourself. but i have no faith in 700r4's anymore. They just dont make strong enough parts for them for racing or high horsewpoer. swap to a stick or something stronger

He knows a few todo with the 700r4/4l60. I know he recomends not to add the extra clutch packs like so many aftermarket tranny shops do. Somthing like they add a extra clutch to the 3/4 and then use thinner shims to acomadate. Phil says the thinner shims do not dissapate the heat enough and burn the 3/4 clutchs up.
Best todo is do a search. I know he has replied on the forum about this . Or just email him.
