I need to put a replacement LT1 motor in an LT1 based Vette. "Crate" motors for these cars are seemingly not available unless you go with a GM factory issue crate motor for $4k+
So, I'm on a tangent. I'm either looking for an inexpensive LT1 "crate" motor, or---
The ZZ4. The ZZ4 is the most bang for the buck replacement out there. Though, it comes with a few difficulties...
The water pump-- I have an electric water pump on this car so this should be a no big deal. Though, I'm wondering if an early cast 350 water pump has the same tapped bolt holes as an LT1 block ?
The cam gear obviously needs changed to drive the opti... again, no biggie there.
The Heads on the ZZ4 are L98 heads... and they flow worse than
LT1 heads and LT4 heads...
Get Ohio Crankshaft to build you a shortblock... upgrade heads to
LT4 or Aftermarket or have your LT1's ported by Port Pros, etc..drop in the LT4 Hot Cam or more. .... then turn that motor loose on your unsuspecting rear tires..
Add this kit to the shortblock of your choice... it's advertised to
make 425hp... that's 75 more horses than the ZZ4...
If Im not mistaken ...the 60's muscle car forged cranks were made
of 5140 steel... a forged crank made of 5140 would be plenty of crank
under 550hp..
The short version. The fronts of the blocks are different. That means that the water pump and the opti won't work on the Gen I block. The gen I (ZZ4) and the Gen II (LTx) cooling systems flow in opposite directions, further complicating the water pump situation. The Gen I distributor will need different wiring than the opti and coil pacs. The computer won't run the Gen I ignition. No conversion is impossible, but I don't see this one as worthwhile. Some people have gone the other way. but they usually start with a complete trimmed engine with all the different components and accessories, a wiring harness, and the computer. Conversion, either way, from a crate engine would be a nightmare and expensive.
The basic long blocks have similar replaceable components. like rings and bearings. I would think YOU could overhaul your Gen II engine for little more than what it costs for a Gen I.
