What does one look for in an engine paint? Where would I find some? I'm looking into a (hopefully) future project and I can't find out about paints properties/colors anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction.
VHT makes a good engine paint, if you want a spray can paint. They offer most factory colors, as well as other common colors. For a rattle can type paint, it holdsup pretty well. Almost all auto parts stores carry it.
Por-15 also makes an engine enamel. It's a brush on paint, but it dries smooth and holds up very well like their other paints.
Plasticote maeks a ceramic reinforced engine paint that works very well. It dires hard and holds up well.
I've used all three, and they are all pretty good. The spray can stuff is easier and faster to apply, but the Por-15 enamel is good too.
Thanks I have seen how well Por products stand up to abuse before and since they do have a variety of colors to choose from I'll put that down on the plan. Thanks for the help!
I mix all my own engine enamels. You can get an almost unlimited color selection by custom mixing them. I painted my 427 BB Corvette bronze to match my 68's Corvette Bronze body. And everything unpainted is either polished or chromed. VERY stunning.
The TPI 355 I just built for my IROC is a metallic cobalt blue. Everything is painted except the fuel rails and the chrome valve covers. That's a looker too.
If there's an interest, I'll post the brand of paint I use.
MoMo the reason I was asking was because I was thinking about a custom look. So, what you've done to your engines is really interesting to me. I'd love to know what paint you use, and I'd also like to see some pictures of those engines if you have them available.
Do you just mix different paints or do you make your own paint??? I know someone who's a scientist in paint research and he can make me any paint I want.
Do you have any recipies?? I'd love to have them even if it's jsut plain-old chevy orange...I could get paint cheaper and of better quality if my buddy makes it for me
I painted my car 6 years ago with PPG acrylic lacquer and shot the engine block with PPG straight acrylic enamel of the same color and it still looks good
