Default Carburating a 383 L-98 Engine....

Can someone tell me the best intake manifold / carburator set-up for a L-98. Engine is a 383 with a mild aftermarket cam. This car is being built strictly for track use so I don't want all the bells & whistles on the carb. etc...

The tech rep at Eldebrock recommended a Performer Air-Gap #7501 (which I don't know will fit under a Corvette hood).

The tech rep at Holly Recommended a Holly HP-0-80528-1

Thanks!

why a mild cam if it is "for track use"?

It's already installed and maybe I shouldn't state mild, but I'm not sure what the specs are. It definitely isn't stock nor is it radical. I feel it is a good cam for track use since it will have good low-end torque.

Does anyone know what manifold will fit under a vette hood. I saw one before on an L-98 equipped track car and it had a stock; (non-cowl) hood.

Well for a track only car I always go for more top end power but since you have stock heads and a mild cam I would think that you will be loosing power at around 5000 RPM so the intake you have listed will work pretty well. The carb you have listed will also work well with your engine size and RPM range. As for getting something that will fit in a c4 I always take measurements from the intake manifold bolt holes on the head to determine a baseline height. Then I put some clay or something soft on top of it and get a max number. After that you can figure out how much your carb/aircleaner takes away and then you can go looking for an intake that will fit up and do what you need.

OK, so are you saying that any 350 intake will work on an L-98 motor & Heads as long as the ports are close to matching???

Thanks!

Yes, the L98 did not use the newer style heads that have the odd angled center bolts for the intake. This means you can install any standard intake as long as the ports are close; port matching will make about anything work.

Are we talking C4? 1st I don't think "all" of the intakes will clear, look thru the Edelbrock catalog where they give the carb pad height and compare them across the board with other brands. I used a Victor Jr. and an E with a 1/2" spacer, no choke horn and the front vent tube barely touches the hood.

Good luck,
Dave

No all of the intakes will not clear the hood.....As I posted above you really need to measure to be sure but all standard SBC manifolds will "bolt up" to that engine. Sorry for the confusion.

I have ordered an Edelbrock 7501 intake manifold and a Barry Grant Mighty Demin 750 carb. I discovered that this engine is a 385 with a 236/242 cam and 113 ported heads. The Mighty Demon should work with that.

I may end-up ordering an Edelbrock 2101 intake manifold for hood clearance issues, but the 2101 needs a lot of porting to match the heads which are 1.25" x 2.00" and I'm not sure if there is enough meat on the manifold to do this...

I have an old Torker that would clear. I could open it up to 1205 if need be. Dont know about any bolt provisions you may need though.

A TorkerII would definitely fit.

The RPM Air-Gap is the best intake, but I don't know if it will fit under the hood. A dropped base Air filter would probably be necessary whatever you use. Your cam is pretty big too; for 113 heads and a Performer intake.
