Default Engine combo

Hello.

I need to rebuild my 77 350 L48, and want some real power out of the engine. 350-400hp +
I use hooker sidepipes.
We have 98 octane pump fuel, and want to be able to use that.

I have looked at some parts from summit and wonder if it will work. Its my first V8 build so i need some advice.

Will a rebuild kit with forged piston and a head combo be enough?

What about dome pistons? Will the CR be to high for 98 octane?

the key is to match all your components together.
a stock/performance rebuild with hyper pistons is fine for the street.they are generally lighter and that is a plus.
some alum heads(trick flow,summit,edelbrock,vortec)will allow you to run more compression without detonation and increase power.i would shoot for 10.5-1 max compression(9.5 with iron heads).a good hyd cam(comp xtreme energy or lunati voodoo 268 grind will be plenty).an rpm intake would be best but a performer is ok if you don't have enough clearance.a worked q-jet or 750 vacuum secondary holley will work fine.recurve your hei with lighter advance springs to get your timing in sooner.an 11" stall converter(many to choose from,i have had good luck with the B&M holeshot)will get you moving.
i have based all these things on 93 octane gas.you can go a little higher with the cam and compression for 98 but not enough to make a big improvement.why spend the extra $$ for gas when you don't need to.

I have a manual gear box, so i dont need any converter.
So 10.5-1 cr is a maximum with alu heads.
Is there any whey i can calculate the cr with different combustion chamber volume?

Should i go flat top piston or dome?

Do a google search for compression ratio calculator.

There are ton out there that you can download, or use on their sites.

No, 10.5 is generally considered the max for pump gas which is usually 93. The aluminum head isn't the restricting factor. Run 110 octane and you can really bump up the CR. But don't get more than one tank full from your fuel source, 98 or whatever, or you're in trouble.

If you are talking about the Euro 98 that's roughly equal to US 93.

CR depends on the cam that you use, but in general I would not go much higher than 10.5 or you need to be very sure about what you are doing.
