Hey, I just took my AFR 210's out of the box and I was shocked to find metal shavings falling out/off the heads. Also I noticed they drilled the rocker stud holes all the way into the intake runner's? What gives, is this normal?
Is this typical of AFR? For $1700 bucks I was hoping for a little more care and pride in the assy. They could have atleast blown them out/off before boxing them up and asking for dam near $2000 bucks.
Do they do all there own machine work? Too bolt these things on out the box would be a serious gamble for the health of my engine. I dont like to think about metal shavings roaming around my engine. Do other heads have rocker studs holes in the top of their intake runners?
I thought it was just me with the problem of the metal shavings and yeah you'd think for damn near 2grand you wouldnt have to worry about this mine cost me $1850 from tpis now the question is now that we have the heads already whats the best way to get the metal shavings and goover on the heads before bolting them suckers in, I was thinking compressed air?
I'm pretty sure they do their own machining.
my 195's holes didn't go into the ports,
most production shops will drill holes to a standard depth. meaning that it will be the same regardless of which size intake port it has. so I would guess that the bigger intake port just happens to intersect with those holes.
Its nothing to worry about, just use sealer on the studs (its recommended anyway).
as far a cleanliness, mine had burr's , some chips along with a coating of oil from the machining process. I'd say its normal. the only way to know its clean is to clean it yourself anyway (thats goes for anything your putting in your motor).
if you don't mind getting wet you can take them to the local car wash and use high pressure to clean them up ( put them on something other than concrete) and or use brake cleaner.
PS. if your going to deburr or grind any on them might as well do it first.
Ditto on the shavings and the light oil coating (I think the oil is from the rocker arm studs). I did not notice if the stud holes went all the way through, I will check when I get back to my house. Hmmm...
Let the buyer beware ,,, It is indeed prudent on your part to check and clean EVERY engine component [new or reconditioned] that you purchase .
BTW a few chips or grinding debris commonly found in these components does not reflect on the finished product . I will take all the dirty good components you send me !!!!!!
It is not unusual for any SBC head with a raised or large intake runner to have the valve stud holes protrude into the roof of the intake runner. Even GM heads do this, take a look at any set of FastBurn or other racing oriented heads. I have also seen the helicoil insert for the rocker studs protruding into the intake port - this is what that little dremel grinder was made for. Even low performance parts should be inspected for any machining debris before installation.
Debris that needs to be cleaned or not, I'm sure you will be impressed with the airflow and power capabilities of the AFR 210's.
My Brodix track 1's had the same issues. I was sending mine into the shop for some porting and milling work anyways so it was no big deal in my case. Very disappointing however. I spent $1350 for the heads and then another $550 for the extra work I had done.looks like we gotta spend $2k to get something decent, eh? Sad state of affairs but definitely the way it seems to go across the board.
Don't forget to cut off the excess from your rocker studs! My studs protruded into the intake ports about a 1/4 inch (typical for a raised runner head). If you leave the excess hanging down it will hurt the airflow that you just paid so much to get!
My AFR 210CP's had the requisite shavings and the rocker studs went through to the intake port. I would suspect that if you are using AFR210's, then you do not mind cleaning parts and double checking things prior to install. If you think that is the worst of your problems, wait untill you try to put the factory valve covers on.
