I got a block from 73-85, 454 i want 500 plus horsepower, what stroker kit and cam combo's, & carb & intake combo's as well as heads should i get in order to achieve my goals....i'm relatively new at rebuilds but i thought i should ask some guru's...as well its a 2 bolt main, should i get splayed end caps and will they hold the horsepower?, as well this should be done on a decent budget this is not a race car, a driver and all motor no NOS...thanks.

You can get the numbers (HP) one of two ways:

First, as a "straight-up" 454" with some "bone-stock" factory components. We recently delivered a 10:1 454, #291 (square-port) iron heads, Probe pistons, 238/248 x .560"/.580" solid-lifter cam, stock aluminum LS-6 high-rise intake, and Holley carb. This build made 495 HP @ 5600 RPM and 500 Ft.Lbs. Torque @ 3900. Runs fine on 93 with ALL the timing (36 degrees) in "up-front", no "tuning" required, simply change the plugs and go!!

Second, also a very recent build, a 492" stroker using a 9.5:1 C.R., some "oval" iron heads (basically all the components from an LS-5), a Comp retro-hydraulic 230/236 x .550"/.550" x 112 LS cam, +.250" rods, also Probe pistons, and able to get through any "judged" shows. It appears 100% "bone-stock" including the "cast-iron" intake AND the Q-Jet carb! This unit did 470+ HP @ 5500 RPM and 523 Ft.Lbs. Torque @ 4200 RPM. Another ride with literally "zero-maintenance", change the oil and plugs, and enjoy!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. The 2 B.M. block with some decent fasteners will be most adequate. Either a set of ARP "main-bolts" or "main-studs"! The 492" stroker above is a 2 B.M. #289 (LS-5) block, the 454" is a 4 B.M. #512 (LS-6) block! Personally, I like the retro-hydraulic's much better. Dyno-tests have proven 30 HP over the conventional "flat-tappet" deals when you do an "apples-to-apples" test.

Everything Gary said-

P/U the latest Hot Rod magazine.

They build a 540 and show what's a good bang for your buck-
heads-rect vs oval-cam-roller & solid roller-intake & spacers and the best carb to use w/ "your" combination.

It's a good read.

2 Bolt main will hold 500hp. Studding the bottom end may help a bit.
