I found a 350 4 bolt block cast number 3970010 that I want to use for a 383 build up.The block is a 1969 model. Will my stock 1990 L98 heads and intake fit on this block?
The biggest difference you're going to run into is the location of the
dipstick. On your L98 it's on the right (girl friend side). On the earlier
350 block the dipstick in on the left (driver's side). If you're going to
use the stock L98 exhaust then the left hand dipstick won't work. If
you're going with long tube headers - not a problem.
The other issue is the earlier block has a 2-piece rear main seal which
requires the appropriate crankshaft and flywheel.
I'm doing the same thing on my new engine (using an earlier block).
What year block would I have to get to get the right hand dip stick and the one peice seals?
The right hand dipstick came about around '82 or so, and the one piece
rear main seal around '88, give or take a year. Note that the oil pan is
different also, depending on which side the dipstick is on. The crankshaft
and flywheel is different depending on type of rear main seal.
Get a block from a 87-92 chevy truck. They are 4 bolt roller blocks with 1 piece rear mains. That is what I used for my 383 buildup. That way its exactly the same as your vette block just 4 bolt.
