I want to get a couple of catalytic converters for my '75's new exhaust system. Which cats should I use? Summit carries Catco and Dynomax. Has anyone used either of these? Which cats shouldn't I use?
Thanks for the advice. I went to the web sites and checked out the prices for a Chevy 5.7L application (I can't find any universal cat prices!). Damn, they're expensive!
Being on the chronological fringe of exhaust catalyst implementations :D in my '75, I'm thinking about buying the cheapest cats I can, putting flanges on them, having some replacement pipes with flanges made that fit the gap, and putting the pipes in there instead. Even better flow. Less money. Raw exhaust smell! And I have the cats ready to swap in just in case I need them.
What's the chance that I would need them? Does anyone know how strict emission checks are in the Chicago area?
New cats? since your car is a '75 you don't have to pass emmissions (atleast here in Massachusetts), so if that's the case in your state, you can dump the cats altogether and use straight pipe and free up some serious horsepower. But, if you have to keep your cats make sure that you get "high flow" or "free flow" cats to maximize the horsepower. Most 'Vette places sell them (i.e., Eckler's, Zip, Corvette Central, etc.). And you may want to throw in an H-pipe if you don't already have one. Hope this helps.
