Hi , any of you guys know offhand if there is supposed to be a gasket between the oil pump and the main bearing cap that it mounts to? This is on my 66 327 I'm rebuilding. I have a new H.V.oil pump and a complete engine gasket kit ,neither of them contain one. I hope to finish assembling my engine tommorow.
Thanks Bruce :smash:
use some non-hardening sealant on the mount faces, just a bit. also, the machined finish on the pump cover is not very good. if you want, you can lap it smooth to improve the seal.
I think some guys would suggest not using sealant of any kind on the pump-to-cap mating surface. This would be to avoid having any of it breaking or sloughing off and getting into your oiling system. But, hey, do what ya gotta do.
Thanks Dude I thought of that too , so I left it metal to metal like Barry had sugested. Plus I hate taking anything apart after its together and torqued.

a little of a non-hardening sealant will cause no problems at all (permatex #2 ?). typically the machined faces of both the bearing cap and pump face are poopie, so a some sealant there will fill the gaps and ensure all the flow is going to the engine.
