Default 427 On The Way!

Just ordered a 427 small block from Shafiroff Engines. Can't wait to see the difference in power. I will have an engine dyno and then take it to a chassis dyno to see what accessories, small headers, and the drivetrain do to the power output. The engine is a little on the expensive side but I think it will be cool to have 427 cubic inches under the stinger hood--no false advertising!! http://www.ultrastreet.net

Very cool. Any idea how much duration and/or overlap the cam has, or what the idle quality will be like?

Don't have the numbers on the cam yet but I talked to the tech and he swears that the cam is not radical and has a fairly smooth idle. I chose the AFR head/cam package for a few dollars more. It comes with a quick fuel 830 cfm carb and a Performer RPM intake. Looks like the engine makes the power pretty low in the RPM range so I hope that it will be very streetable. I'll see if I can get the cam specs today. 565HP@5800 and 575ft/lbs@4600 Got the approximate numbers and they look pretty tame: 236/242 duration and .520/.540 lift.

Sounds good - those are nice numbers. Stay in touch on the idle quality after you get it running. I'm running a 230/236 cam in mine and it's pretty reasonable - which is all realative of course. I've got a big cubic inch small block in my 85 vette and you're going to love the low end and mid range torque. I think it'd be cool to say you have a 427 in your 67 roadster

IMO - Those small cams would not really make a 427 a performance motor. I also kind of doubt that kind of hp being true on the delivered motor. My original 427 was Hardcore Racing from Bill Mitchel. It ran OK with the supplied comp cams extreme 242/248 off the shelf H-roller. It was not overly powerful

Most of those places only charge $100 for the 4.155 bore to make a 434. every little bit of TQ helps

They will do an engine dyno prior to shipping so we will be able to see the real numbers. I know that this will be run with open headers and no accessories but still should be pretty darn stout. I will try and get them to video the dyno run with the sheet. I willl get a chassis dyno done after it has been broken in so we can really see what is going on. I am running 215/65/15 tires so I don't think that I will need > 450 RWHP/Torque!!!

Do your self a favor and ask for the full dyno results. It will be like 10 pages of info. I have respect for Shafiroff...but I've also been involved in several crate motor deals that didn't produce anything like they were supposed to do. I watched 2 540's that were supposed to make high 700's on HP barely break 625HP at the crank. The second one was the replacement for the first and were being tested on a dyno that is very well proven. Seen the same with other crate deals. I do know of a buddy with a Shafiroff shortblock where he installed his heads and cam and it is doing well. Longevity has been fine. Another one had valvetrain issues big time but he lived close enough that he pulled the engine and took it to them to fix all the problems and metal that went through it. Interestingly when he got it home he decided to check the valves and it must have been the same guy who set them because they were all whacked and about to do the same thing. Of course it had been *dyno'd* before shipment too!

I'm sure you'll be fine.,..just do your homework and check closely to be sure what you're getting.

Thanks for the heads-up. I had been toying with the idea of planning/building my own but I wasn't sure what I was going to produce--no engine dyno and I have had bad experience with building one from scratch in the past! I read a bunch of good stuff about Shafiroff and hoped that they would be trustworthy. It is hard to find people/businesses that you can rely on these days--everyone wants to cut corners for an extra buck. You would think that reputation would be worth more than that!! I thought about using Bill Mitchell but was told that quality control was not there. Its funny to me that if I provide an inferior product I get sued to the hilt and no one would ever use me again. Oh well, I can only hope and pray that Shafiroff wants good reviews on this and other forums!
