My builder susgested that I run one to help protect the engine on the top end. Has any one used one before? Are they an install and forget type of thing? Do you increase your sump capacity to account fot it beforehand? I have a 7qt sump, say it takes a quart into it's resivoir, would I have to add another qt? or do I just forget about it? Are there any Con's I should know about?
Re: Educate me on oil acumulators please! (88-406)
88-406, are you using the car for any road course events? If not, I'm not sure what benefit there would be for going straight. If you add an accumulator for the right reasons, you need to get a three quart unit. (I question the value of the little ones.) You do increase your oil capacity be the volume of the Accusump, the lines, and any oil cooler volume. As far as a "set it and forget it" set up, the short answer is yes and no. "Yes", you need to activate it before you start the engine every time, and you need to make sure it's "charged" before you shut it down everytime. "No", you shouldn't have any major maintainence. (although the elelctric valves are not known for their longevity) Now if what your engine guy is referring to is to use it as a Pre-oiler, yes there is some value to that. Tell us more.
Re: Educate me on oil acumulators please! (88-406)
If you take corners hard & you are concerned about oil climbing up away from the pickup (allowing air to get sucked in) - it's a good idea. I would go with the presurized unit rather than the gravity fed model.
As stated above, you do need to close the valve before you shut off the motor to keep from losing the pressure.
One way around this is to only use it when you plan on driving hard - leave it off when you go to the store.
If you do plan on getting one, also get the electric valve they sell for nitrous bottles. This will prevent you from having to get out to open or close the valve (or you could mount it in the drivers compt.)

H rocks, 71 coupe
I plan on doing a mixture of events, some roadrace,auto-X & drag's for fun. So far it seems like it may be a good ideal, but it's still not clear to me. Say I have a 7qt pan, then I add a 3qt accumulator, and an oil cooler. How much oil should I fill up with? 10qts? is that normal for this setup?
Re: Educate me on oil acumulators please! (CFI-EFI)
Haven't been up to much. Was working on an offenhauser install on my CFI and then I had the chance to buy the whole deal above and I couldn't resist. :D
Re: Educate me on oil acumulators please! (Twinnie)
Unfortunatly, not too much. I finally got my ported manifold on last fall. Good for about a half second. Bored TB's gave me ZERO. I think the stock heads, cam, and exhaust are already processing all they can. I had a reasonably successful race season last year. I'm chomping at the bit, two more months until we start again. I got TOM400CFI out to the track last year. It sounds like he'll participate again this year. Have you got anything running? Any times? Keep in touch.
Re: Educate me on oil acumulators please! (CFI-EFI)
Will do.
I don't have times. My car is disassembled to the lasst bolt and the motor you see is a mockup. I'm still lacking some parts here and there. It'll be untill the end of this year or maybe next year untill I have it assembled again!
