Please Help: Building 302 DZ Replica Need Some Specs!
Hello all. I am planning on trying to build a replica of the Z/28 302 DZ 290hp engine like used in some of the first gen Camaros. However I need some help. I have looked all over for some specs on this engine and can't find any.
I need some cam specs and I need to know exactly which block, crank, heads and pistons and rods I will need?
I would assume I would need a 327 block and a 283 crank? Would that be right? I'm clueless here can someone help me out and tell me what I would need (not including intake and carb) to build a 302 DZ 290hp replica?

Carson: That 302 Histroy link is just what I needed! Thanks man.
Yea everyone wants me to build a 350, but I want somthing a little different. I actually plan on building the engine to specs and after it is broken in I'm going to slap on Edelbrock Multi Port injection and then some cheap aluminum heads. That should make it fun as heck to drive not to mention it will be going on a VERY light car (Porsche 914).

As far as I can recall the Z28 302 were built from 67 to 69. In 67 it used a small journal 3" stroke crank (ie 283 crank), but in 68 and 69 it used a large journal crank. Also I think all the 302 blocks were 2-bolt main. I also believe they were equiped with the 3030 camshaft. Try posting this thread in the C1/C2 section to SWCDuke. He is probably the most knowledgeable source.

The 302 did use a small journal crank in 67. In 68 it went to a large journal and 4 bolt mains. the same as teh 350 block. The 68 and 69 cranks are the rare ones being large journal and 3 inch stroke. The cam specs varied a lot because of the way the duration was measured. They used a long duration moderate lift cam. the optional cam was the "140" cam. More duration and more lift. My brother in law had this cam in his 302 Z28. It would pull to 8000 rpm. That motor just screamed. Not a lot of power and you had to rev it to get the car moving but it screamed. He has since put it in storage and now runs a 421 ci 600 HP small block. A lot more fun to drive and tons of torque. He said he will never go back to the 302. Only for some one who wants an original motor car.

I looked through the 302 History site and didn't see any mention of 302 engine codes. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, ONLY the 69 302s were coded DZ, the others were coded MO. I also agree with the history site, in that ONLY 69 302s got 4bolt mains.
Personally, if I were going to build a 302 replica, it would be from a SMALL journal 327 block (preferably a 67 date code) and a crank from any mid-60s 283. WHY? Small journals, that's why. Less friction, more power. I'd keep it 2bolt and use main studs (rather than bolts), or, add aftermarket splayed caps. Rather than the 30-30 cam, I'd run the 1st design offroad 140 cam.
