Just want to send a big “thank you” to all the folks who pitched in on the fuel system issue. The problem was indeed that we were running serial. We split the system into two hoses with both pumps running parallel & got over 200 GPH. According to Weldon’s numbers, we would now be good for over 1,500HP at 50psi. I’m not sure we will even try to get to that point. Right now I am just focused on getting it on the street & getting to drive the thing. If we get over 1,000HP on the first dyno with the present pulleys (only about 8-10psi) I will be very happy. I may decide to get some more severe pulleys & go for 1,500, but then again I may not. Not a whole lot of people out there driving around in 1,000HP street cars, so I have no clue what to expect.
We’re looking at starting it next week. Chris is finishing up the radiator right now. Body is on for good. There’s no turning back! Hopefully Mpeg’s will be forthcoming shortly. Again, thank you all!
Here are the final pics that Chris took before putting the body on. Check out those nice shiny Jet coated headers! They do an awesome job…

Merlin, That is an awesome machine, I think you will be happier with (only) 1000 HP on the street. I am making in the neighborhood of 580-600HP in my 454 and I just can't imagine 1500 HP being streetable. I could be wrong but that thing will crazy on you very fast, 1500HP on street tires, HANG ON. :chevy
Looking forward to hearing how that beast performs at the flats and the drags.

69 N.O.X. RATT – I totally agree with you. I wanted to do one high HP run at the dyno just to see what kind of power it can deliver, but for the street we’re going to tune it down as low as it can go. For the flats we will crank it up because out there you can take a little more time to get up to speed & there’s no pedestrians to take out! There are still so many question marks. We’ll know more when we get out there & start playing. Changing boost is as simple as a pulley change…
Re: Soon Merlin will live. Very soon.... (Merlin522)
Merlin,
Two words- Friggin awesome! I hope that passes the censor test & doesn't come out sounding....impotent :D It's good to see you getting so close to running- don't forget to post the sound when you have time!
By the way, I might have missed this along the way but- where did you end up getting your headers?
Thanks Les, will do!! The headers started out as Hooker Super Comp’s & then we had the highly modify them. The tubes hit all over the place, so Chris has to chop them off & rework them. What a pain! Last, we sent the whole thing out to have the Jet coating. They turned out much nicer than expected!
Re: Soon Merlin will live. Very soon.... (Merlin522)
Yea, they came out great! Hey, when you get that baby dialed in I wanna race you............but only if you promise to remove 7 of your spark plug wires! Even then I might get hosed....
Re: Soon Merlin will live. Very soon.... (Merlin522)
Good to hear steve. Keep up the good work....my project has been on a halt lately...I have so much stuff to do. :( And the body had an accident 2 weeks ago...long story.
Re: Soon Merlin will live. Very soon.... (Merlin522)
Merlin I want to come check this car out when you start it.. Could I could I pa pa pa please???? by the way I can see why you went to Honest Performance in Federal way, They are the first group of people who KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT, and are TOTALLY WILLING TO HELP YOU!!.. I shop only there now. By the way I should be starting my car this weekend, I am having Honest weld a coulple of down pipes, the it's bolt on and start tuning.
Re: Soon Merlin will live. Very soon.... (Merlin522)
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Holy farking shirt, man. I hope there's a magazine layout in this car's future. Many editors would be soiling themselves for the chance, especially since you have "in-progress" pics. Holy farking shirt...
Les – Hehehe… The tolerances on this thing are so close that even removing one would probably render it useless. Let’s see, maybe we can just put a throttle stop on it. Quarter throttle would only be around 375HP :)
Monty – Now if only Boron would get cheaper!! How you coming on yours? Everyone seems to want us to race. I think maybe a burnout contest would be fun. If we could both get to cruise in & have a little demo run, that would probably be wildly popular. Like I tell everyone else, any runs between us would be just for fun. This isn’t really about competition for me. Both of our cars are capable of causing us great bodily damage. I am eager to run the car at the drags, but it will never be able to be run anywhere near it’s potential. A couple of fun runs between us would be great though!
Lohkay – Oh no!!! What happened? I hope you can get back on track soon. Hang in there!!!
WashingtonRacer – Hey Aaron. You bet! How’s that new hood working? Turns out a buddy of mine wants to buy the old one, so no worries there. Chris at Honest is good people. That’s why I chose them. I called around & asked everyone who the best is & his name constantly came up. They never try to rip me off. He’s always up front with me. Bottom line, he’s not just some salesman. He builds his own race cars & then goes out & runs them! I’ll look you up next week when we are ready to start. Let’s see some MPEG’s of yours too!!
Clink69 – I noticed that. The lighting was doing funny things on that pic. After what this frigging car has cost me, it SHOULD be gold plated!! :)
LPDesRoche – You & me both! We should have some answers soon.
The Dude – The Big Lewboski! One of the all time classic movies. I about had to clean my pants out from laughing so hard when I saw it. I’m sure the mags will want to feature this thing. It may take quite a while before I have everything detailed & ready to go, but hopefully some time within the next year it will be ready. Then, I will sell this one & get underway with the next one…
Gkull – What’s up George?! I am very amazed that such a small starter can cranks these beasts. Pretty tough little things if you ask me. Yeah, I’m getting a little nervous. It really hits me when I stand there & look at the car. The thought of that engine getting out of control keeps me up at nights. Our mad dash out at the salt flats should be VERY interesting…
Re: Soon Merlin will live. Very soon.... (Merlin522)
Steve,
I was planning on taking the car down to the Corvetteforum Cruise-in in BG this May - it sounds like you're gonna try to make it?
Unfortunately, I am having problems with the chassis shop that is SUPPOSED to be doing my headers, intercooler, and exhaust. I talked to the owner last week and he said he had started on it. Well, I was out of town on business last week, so I went down there today to pull the injectors off the motor and get a few things out of the car. Unfortunately, I saw that he hasn't done anything to the car except get it dirty.
On my drive home I decided that I have had enough of his delays and lies. When I got home I called and told his shop foreman that I'm coming to pick the car up either monday or tuesday, and I want my $5k deposit back. My brother in law is an attorney, so if he gives me any hassle about it, I'm ready to go.
I've already found another shop that can do an equal, if not better job, and can start on it in 2 weeks. Besides being honest about his tiemframe to do it, I feel good about the new shop because the owner seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the car and the fact that I want it done right using the proper materials (321 stainless, rather than mild steel or 304 stainless) So hopefully, I'll get the car done by the beginning of April.
Once I get the car back, I have to pull the motor back out to get the pistons and cam swapped, as well as rehone the cylinders for wider piston/cylinder clearance and o-ring the block. The crank will need to be rebalanced as well, since the new turbo pistons are a few grams heavier. That will probably take another 3 weeks or so. Plus we're gonna dyno tune and test it before I put the engine back in the car.
I'm also getting the car painted, so it's gonna be a real tight fit to get the car done my Memorial Day. I might paint it another color...
If you're gonna make the Cruise-in, I'll do my best to get down there as well.
Monty, that sucks! I hope the new shop works out better. Nothing makes me more nervous than having to leave my Vette with someone else. Especially somebody I don't know. I had a bad experience with a body shop last year that required two repaints on my front end.
