Default Install timing chain or pushrods/rocker arms first?

I've read that the pushrods/rocker arms should be installed first. But how do you rotate the cam w/ the spring pressure pushing against the pushrods to install the rest of the pushrods at zero lift??? The only thing I can think of is to install the timing chain so that it will be easy to rotate the cam.

install the gears and chain first. if you have hyd lifters do not install all the push rods at one time because when you turn the engine over to adj. the valves you can collaps a lifter that you have not adjusted yet and when you try to adjust that valve you will not get the proper adjustment. :chevy

So when I go to screw on the polylocks @ zero lash then 1/2 to 1 turn more, I need to do so when the valve is totally closed and the lifter is not collapsed, right?

Also, I remember reading somewhere that after you get zero lash and do 1/2-1 turn more on the polylocks, you should tightent the lock on top and then back the nut out to make sure it is locked in. Is this true?

setting hyd lifters you should do it with the intake manifold off so you can see the lifter cup and see if you are preloading the lifter. with the manifold on make sure you are on the heel of the the lobe, rotate the push rod with your fingers till you feel resistance, then go 3/8 a turn more. with poly locks now set the allen lock screw while holding the nut with a wrench. then turn the nut down the remaining 1/8 turn. for poly locks to work the best the rocker arm studs should be ground flat on top so the locking screw has a flat surface to lock on to.

hhmmmm.... I might have a small problem...

The pushrods might be a bit short. I installed the #1 intake and exhaust pushrods and rockers. With the arms tightened, the roller is just slightly back of 1/3. It is very hard to tell how far forward of center it goes on full lift because the arm snaps back down as soon as the lifter reaches max lift. I will be able to tell better when I get the rest of the arms installed.

As long as the arm tip does not reach past the edge of the valve stem, will everything be OK? How imperative is it for the rocker arm tip to be PERFECTLY centered?

cover the top of the valve stem with magic marker pen and then install the rocker arm and turn the engine over and the roller tip will mark the magic marker ink where it runs. :chevy
