Depending how old you are you can easily eat up a $1,000 in just your auto insurance (single, under 21, and male). Other than that your biggest bang for the buck would be nitrous.

NITROUS , LOL  , no like i meant under the hood of the car, engine mods, i mean yeah nitrous would be great but i dont want it right away. thanx for the suggestion tho  im thinkin like stuff that you did to your vette, your runnin 11 seconds in the 1/4 mile WHOLY $(-)IT thats what im talkin about, but little mods here and there from time to time when i get paid. I have about $250 right now.

For straight line drag racing with your automatic trans, a higher then stock stall convertor would produce lots of bang for the buck. A $200 convertor, like a 2500stall, would knock at least a half second from a standing start 1/4mi ET. The next half second could cost $2000.

First off, get your ignition system working 110%. Get the quick advance curve kit from Lars, a good set of plug wires, and a hot coil.

Second, make sure your Q-Jet is properly setup. Again, sending it to Lars is your best bet.

After those 2 things are done, I gaurantee you will be much happier with the performance of that car.

Next thing to do would be install a mildly over-stock cam, something like a Comp 262H or 268H.

A high flow cat converter, or if you can escape the EPA and survive, true duals.

Don't make the mistake of ruining a good original car before you do these simple things.

My 2 cents!
1. Headers and true duals. If you can get away with it in your state.
2. Cam. I would go with Comp Cams Extreme Energy 262H
3 If you still have money left over because you have done all the work your self a aftermarket intake would not hurt. BTW check out your local speed shop for the intake once in awhile you can pick up a used one pretty cheap.
