Default What rings for L98?

Was thinking about using the Total Seal Gapless rings when I put the engine back together. Anybody have any experience with them on the street?

As always thanks for the expert advise.

There are guys that LOVE 'EM and guys that wouldn't be in the same County with them.

During a freshen up, I installed a set on a BB 1/4 mile engine some years back and saw no difference from Speed Pro Plasma Molys in either ET or MPH,

Sorry, no street experience.

Most ads sing the praises of their low leak down numbers, but that kinda stuff is really misleading. As far as I'm concerned, static leak down testing is only for diagnostics.

My view: Speed Pro single plasma molys with their SS50U standard tension oil ring set is bullet-proof. I use nothing else, period.

Just my thoughts and, as always, 'your mileage may vary'.

As always, Jake, your advise is appreciated. You make some good points and I bet the SpeedPro rings are about half the price. Thanks

I forgot to mention this, but I always buy my rings .005 oversize and custom gap them to each bore.

I'm trying a new setup, and the jury's still out.

The latest info from Speed Pro, JE and others is a change in end gap settings.

In the past the second ring was always set tighter than the top ring. Latests tests have shown that the reverse provides more power.

Seems that widening the gap on the second ring .001 or more than the top gap (not less) per inch of bore, reduces the pressures on the top ring that causes the top ring to unseat earlier. Because the top ring can then remain seated against the wall longer, it allows more combustion pressure to act on the top of the piston. Bingo, more power, or so they say.

I'm using that setup now on my street engine and haven't so far seen any negative side effects. Blowby is negligible, but I can't say anything about power production because I don't have anything to compare the present setup to.

.018/.024 may be ideal, but I got 'nervous in the service' and set mine at .018/.022. maybe next time around I'll creep up on .024

I had the total seal gapless rings on my 383. No ill affects here what so ever. Can't say I actually saw a benefit over the usual Speed Pro's but no noted problems.
