Default decoding front pad

Hi, I am sorta new to this. have a chance to buy what he said was a dated April '63 block with the front pad stamped PO426SC. Any help decoding would be appreciated. Not sure but I came up with a '62 model year because of the suffix SC. Thanks

Here's a quick break down of the engine pad code:

P= nothing, probably an "F" for Flint, MI engine plant

04=April

26=26th day of the month for engine build

SC= 327 250HP Automatic Tranny

The engine was for the 1963 model year as Chevy started producing each car model year the previous September.

Have fun with your new block!

mr. beachcomber, thanks for the quick response. But what I still don't understand is he said the block was dated D 17 63. That would put the casting date just about in the middle of the '63 model year. I could only find where the suffix code was used for the '62 327/250 auto model year.
Like I said, I am new to this and just don't want to buy a mistake. Thanks again, 63 silverpearl

Glad to have helped out. I used the Corvette Black Book for the engine suffix info. According to the Black Book, the "SC" code was used for 327/250 auto Vettes from the 1962 through 1964 model years.
