The Z06 is all aluminum. GM never used an aluminum Gen I SBC in production. They did (do?) sell a bare block, part number 366300, with a 4" bore, and 4 bolt splayed outer bolt mains. Also, there are aftermarket blocks available. I have never seen a "crate" sbc cataloged with an aluminum block, probably due to cost. I'm sure one of the builders would be happy to put one together, though. You may need to put up your key to Fort Knox, as collateral. Good luck.

PAW sells an Aluminum small block kit... assembly required. Year 2000 prices (Y2K catalog page 61) were $7099 for the short block, $8595 for the long block. So, no its not a crate motor. They are QUITE expensive. Just like CFI-EFI said aftermarket blocks are available... personally I don't see any advanatge unless weight is Priority#1.

If you're really interested in an aluminum block, I know where I can get you a Dart aluminum Rocket block, brand new for $3500. That's about $1000-1500 discount.

A bare aluminum SBC block is aorund 90 lbs, a bare SBC block weighs 175 to around 200 lbs, depending on what casting, and what year it is. The iron SBC blocks made in the 80's are lighter than the one's made in the 60's and early 70's. An iron aftermarket block like a Dart, Motown, or Rocket block are right at 200 lbs due to the thicker cylinder walls, webs, and decks.

As far as I know, the iron Rocket blocks are selling at the regular price, which is $1895.00. If you're interested I could ask to make sure.

Default Motown Lite Block

The June Hot Rod had an article on World Products Aluminum Small Block that is coming out with soon. Just over 100 lbs. with sleeves. the best deal is the package as an upgrade to the Motown crate engines where the AL block adds $2,000 to the base price od the engine. The block is priced at $3,295 with nodular iron main caps and $3,495 with spayed billet caps.

YOu could buy a lot of nice parts for the price of an alumimum block. Not really worth it even if it was for racing, you get about a tenth in the 1/4 mile for 100lbs probably get more by jetting properly.

Now if it's for bragging rights that's a different situation

The lighter your car, then the performance gain would be greater. So say I got my '84 down to 2900lbs another 100 pound drop would be very hard to find, so an aluminum block would be cool. It would also be good getting more rearward weight bias, which is optimal for road racing (it's the kind with turns).

That is a very light C2!

I havent done much thinking about the subject...

But an aluminum intake, heads, and thin wall headers with a titanium exhaust system... and of course the aluminum block would definetly shave some weight!

I wonder how much weight you could save just by cutting out the inner fenderwells and putting in some supports (ala thin race glass front clip...)

Hmmm!

Tube frame chassis
Light weight fiberglass
Aluminum motor
Light weight alternator
AL drive shaft
Carbon fiber half shafts
C4 style alum differential
Light weight track transmission
Alum/mag wheels
Gutted interiour

No power anything!

That! would be a FAST car.
