Is it possible to put a Richmond 5spd in a 65 vette replacing the muncie 4 spd and have the shifter in the stock location?. Richmond 5 spd has the external hurst shifter, trans has the 1 to 1 5th gear.
Vette is presently 327 cu in, 350 hp, munci 4 spd. Would like to have a highway friendly gear with overdrive.
Tks, Bob

Yes, I did it. I had to shorten my driveshaft a little and put on a turbo 400 slip yoke. The gears I put in my 9" ford Heidts rearend are 3.0 which is like having an overdrive even with 1:1 5th gear. I love it -- never get out of 4th gear in the quarter, and nearly idling on the freeway doing 75 in 5th!
Greetings
Thank you for your reply. I do have a few questions: is the shifter still in correct location?
Did you have to modify the trans mount?
thank you, Stovebolt77
I had one in my 65. I bought it a long long time ago when nothing else with 5 spds was available. I would not buy one today. It shifts nowhere near as nicely as other newer design transmissions out there. Easy to disassemble and replace bearings though.
I have one in my 65. I Like it. The gear ratios work really well with a 3.08 rear. I have never shifted one of the Tremecs so I don't have a comparison to make against one of those. It is stiffer than a Muncie. Use a Long shifter instead of a Hurst. I did not have to modify the driveshaft with the stock rear. I did make a removable cross member for ease of possible future removal but according to the install directions you don't have to.
I noticed a little problem shifting the other day in my '66. When I got it back to the house I saw that it was a little low on fluid. After I topped it off it started shifting great again.
