I was thinking that if i get over 400hp and more torque than i could handle with a 383 and a SR, that the 86's 700R4 would fail fairly quickly.
so what should i think about having done to it, beefed up with new TC and cooler (ill get those 2 either way) or a whole new transmission and if so what kind?
or should i think about swapping in a ZF6 or other 6spd? or is there a 5speed automatic that could handle it?

Don't be too hasty to discount your 700R4. I'm probably harder on my 700 than most are on theirs. Over the last 6 years I've averaged over 250 passes each year. Although I do freshen it up each year, it has withstood the rigors of 400+ HP. The 3-4 clutch pack is pretty much toast by 250 passes....keep tuned to what the tranny is doing when shifting 2-3 and 3-4 (you will have to lift to get it to shift into 4th). If you don't subject it to the kind of abuse that I do you should be OK for a long time. Good luck with your project!!! :)
ODennis - You said that you have to lift to shift 3-4. I was trying to think if I have to. With my 5000 rpm gov. I'm sure that it does.
700's can be built with a warranty for 850 hp. I put allot of bad miles on mine and I can tell that the 2-3 shift isn't as snappy as it used to be. At the drag races the 6800 rpm gov. was hitting the 7000 rev limiter sputter a few times. It's probably better for the rearend like that anyway. :seeya
