Default Where to learn?

I don't know very much about cars mechanically, but would like to learn. I haven't found anything in-depth about engines. What's a good place to learn about all the specs people quote about their engines (valve lift...)?

All of the above. Depending on how much you know, you might start out with a book or two from the library on the basics. Otherwise, subscribe to a half dozen magazines, and read, read, read. Once you know what things are and what they do, as stated above, nothing beats hands on experience. Have fun and good luck.

I suggest you get subscriptions to Chevy High Performance and Car Craft, and try some of the books mentioned earlier.

I agree with what everyelse has stated, as well, you may want to hang out with a friend who works a lot on small block chevys or the big-ums, and just watch what hes doing (don't get in his way, or ask to many questions) and just offer to help out with getting the tools he needs, etc. Once you start feeling more comfortable and familar with a motor, you'll find working on it a lot easier. Good luck, it takes time and experience
