Default How to identify a Bowtie block?

Just completing my rebuild and I need to get the UK registration modified to reflect the new engine. I've been told Bowtie blocks were never originally in any cars, but were sold by Chevvy OTC as a race block, therefore having no engine number. Is this correct?

That is correct, "Bowtie" blocks are OTC blocks, not production blocks. They cna be identified by the "bowtie" emblem cast into the side of the block as well as their casting number.

Bowtie emblem cast into the block? Hmm. Think I'll go looking!

Heavy as hell? Yes! When the crate was delivered, the delivery guy asked if I'd give him a hand lifting it down off the lorry. So that'd be a quarter ton between two people at about shoulder height, I pointed out. He didn't seem to have a problem with that concept and he wasn't a big bloke either. Needless to say, I refused delivery! They returned the next day with a tail lift, and I still had to use the engine crane to get the crate in the garage.

Oh well - a man's gotta have a hobby!

Mine has a number of 182 about next to the middle bearing cap just above the sump and the same number on the top of the engine between the inlet manifold and the bell housing......curiously on the face of the engine, next to the rear main seal is a different # H-1 184........the block came new like this so i am sure the numbers are correct....hope this helps......john :chevy
