Default Question about AFR Heads

On my new AFR heads there are tapped holes which are for (I assume) oil pipes. I need to get blanking plugs for them as they are not needed in my application, but am unsure of the size. They *look* like 1/2 inch NPT. Can anyone confirm the size for me please?

TIA

If it's on the side of each head between the exhaust ports. It's the hole for the water temp sensors. Yes, you should install a brass plugs with teflon tape.

Hi Lt1er,

No, these holes are in the end of the cylinder heads pointing towards the cockpit bulkhead. They penetrate the heads into the rocker area - thus I guessed they were for oil. There are 2 on one head and 1 on the other. Of the two, one is already blanked and is lower then the other. From it's positioning, I'm guessing that one opens into a water way. So that leaves one open hole on each head that I have to plug (or end up with a bell housing covered in oil . :nono: )

Thanks Steve

You are correct...They are for oilers on high rpm solid cammed motors. I believe they are 3/8" though... If they aren't threaded do so with a tapered pipe tap and install aluminum pipe plugs. Do not use teflon tape as it can cause cracks around the hole; use teflon paste or RTV as sealant.

Thanks Jeb - straight to the heart of the matter as always!

They are threaded (fortunately, as I forget to deal with them before refitting the motor). I'll buy two lots of plugs I think - one 3/8 and one 1/2, so I should be covered either way (assuming the thread is NPT!)

That's a top-tip about the teflon paste. Should teflon tape always be avoided in ally heads?
