Default interchangeable engines? best options??

My grandfather has a 1977 Corvette and the engine burns more oil than the gulf of mexico is producing. I thought is would be a fun gift to build a high performance engine for him and drop it in. I'm not a at all versed in the realm of Corvettes. So here's where I'm starting. If I were to put a different engine in it like a 454 (Just for example), would it even fit in the engine bay? what type of engine would you suggest I start this project with? Opinions please The car is not staying purely restored or anything so I really don't mind if it's not all original. Thanks in advance

A 383 crate motor would be one of the better choices for the car. For examples look at ultrastreet.net for the different small blocks and big blocks compatible with your car. Any motor will fit if you apply sufficient $$$ to the problem.

Default crate engine

I replaced my engine in my 77 with a gm crate engine and it was the best investment I could have made. I wanted the zz4 engine but went with the 330 HP MODEL. 330/350 H.O iIt was more in my budget, little less hp, but more cost efficent cause i ordered it turn key. The serpentine set up on a zz4 would not work on vetts my era due to how the radiator sits, tilted back ward so my mechanic told me no sense in paying 1500.00 more and having to remove that set up and order another. Anyhow I love it a 100%.
