I have a close to stock 350 now, and am considering new heads. All I've read indicates I should be looking in the 190cc - 200cc range. But, what are the pro's and con's with both oversizing and undersizing intake runner size?
Also, assuming I have 8.5 to 1 compression now with stock heads, what would 64cc heads increase my compression to? I'd likely move to aluminum.
If your engine is "close" to stock, stay that way. Big runners are for big inches and big rpm. If you are doing neither stay small. Ihave TFS heads and they are good for 450 hp. Are you going for more? If not, use any of the aftermarket replacement heads. The 64cc chambers will add about 1 pt on comp. A good bargain is the vortec heads. Please don't take this as the last word. There are people on this forum who have forgotten more than I know. Use a DD to play w/combo.
You are correct to be concerned about intake port runner size. If you are not going to race every weekend you will be happier with a power band that has a lot of torque between idle and 4500 RPM. Small ports will provide the intake velocity that you need to acheive this.
Edelbrock Performer cylinder heads if you have to comply with emissions laws, Performer RPM if you do not, will wake the engine up nicely and be much lighter than stock iron. These cylinder heads have 170 c.c. intake runners and as mentioned above you can use the 64 c.c. chambers to increase the compression ratio.
Jack,
You might page Silver77 and ask him how he likes his Pro Action 180's. That buddy has cracking throttle response with a stock untouched bottom end and .040 thick gaskets 64cc heads and custom ground cam
Felpro offers a coated .015 head gasket and Victor Reinz has a .026 head gasket to help get your compression up with stock pistons
A pair of D-port L98 heads would probably be excellent for you. Small runner, excellent swirl. With a die grinder you can do some pretty neat things to these heads.
Theye can be had relativle cheap (used) The somewhat thin deck won't be a problem for the low CR and athm. motor you have.
