I`m about to switch my fuelpump.Wich road should i take?Eletric or Mech?
The car is a -73 BB .Where have you put your eletric pump?Near the tank or upfront in the engine compartment..
Should mension that its Hi Perf pumps i`m looking for..
A good aftermarket mechanical can do wonders. For the street I like them for reliability and no noise. Mine makes over 600 RWHP (over 700 at the flywheel) using one. No starvation issues yet. And I don't even have one of the largest ones. Just a Holley one.
If you decide on an electric, install it at the rear. They are good "pushers" not "pullers". The gear-rotor types are a little quieter and make sure you use a relay close to the pump to run it. Many times low voltage cuts their output. I've used the Mallory one's and they are relatively quiet. The old Holley Blue pump works great but is noisier. I haven't heard one of the new black ones yet.
Don't buy one of the mega $$ race setups.. they aren't intended for continous use and die early. You can use voltage reducers to help them out but its a PITA for real street cars.
i have a holley blue pump with one of those large fram canister filters.
since the pumps are pullers, i had to install a 1/2 id line on the bottom of my fuel tank-- it gravity feeds the fuel filter, then goes to the pump up through a whole new 1/2 id fuel line. it's a fairly simple process, i just drilled a hole in the bottom of the tank and soldered it in place, then slapped on fuel resistant epoxy over the solder-- no leaks.
Ok...I ve decided to run with a mech pump to avoid all the extra work an electric would demand.Im going with the Edelbrock (EDL 1715,Summit nr).Summit says that i shuould use a regulator, but the guy in the shop says that i wouldnt need to.Any ideas? :smash:
what type carb are you running? can the needle seat assembly handle up 14 psi? if you're not running a return line or a regulator after the pump, then you'll likely flood the carb.
another thing to watch with those mech pumps- i had holleys version of the same pump-- it went after 2 yrs. not totally gone, it just wouldn't feed the engine past 5500. i took it apart and ported out the little ports, but it wound up being the spring was shot, thats when i decided on an electric.
BTW, the EDL-1715 you posted is for small ford, according to summit's catalog.
Ok..The nr should say EDL1712(GM,Ford,whats the differens :smash: )
I`m running a brand new 850 DP.The old pump has got a return line to the tank.I wonder if theres a return line on the Edelbrock
if i remember right, my holley didn't have a return line fitting either. no big deal.. just splice the original return line into the feed line coming out the pump- that would relieve some of the 14 psi.. you could even make it adjustable by using a "T" brass line block with a modified NPT plug in the middle acting as the regulator.
Hmm..Na..I think im going with a regulator. My dad always told me that"If your going to do something,do it properly or let it be"...I`m sure theres nothing wrong with that kind of solution, but its gasoline that flows throu those lines, and i would not like if it blew up on me.. :smash: :smash:
actaully, the brass t-thing is no different than those regulators- cause, well that's really all they are-- a three way line with the middle line acting as the regulator portion- only diff is the one they recommmend is cast aluminum, and costs more.
