Default Question on LT1 balancing & symptoms

Is an LT1 externally balanced? If it is externally balanced, is the flexplate weighted? Assuming it IS externally balanced and the flexplate IS weighted....AND one of the weights falls off the flexplate; could that destroy a torque converter and transmission input shaft? How bad would the engine vibrate?

Trying to help a friend who has destroyed a vigilante converter & input shaft and just replaced it, but some of the same symptoms are present, like the converter unlocks or chatters for no reason at highway speed. There is a slight vibration while cruising on the highway, but nothing unusual while reving the engine in neutral. I have a theory that one of the weights fell off the flexplate and the flexplate is vibrating and thereby destroying the converter. What do you think?

Default Re: Question on LT1 balancing & symptoms (ralph)

LT1/4 motors are both internally and externally balanced. The harmonic balancer up front is neutral and the flwheel has an offset weight to external balance. Does that make sense?
A few years ago I swapped flywheels and the new one was zero balanced. Guess what, it vibrated! I then sent an extra LT1 crank/rod/piston etc. to the balance shop to actually figure out the bob weight of a typical LT1 assembly. We matched the flywheel to this figure and it was much better.
Hope this helps.
