Flywheel needed to balance?
I was having my rotating assembly balanced and the guy at the shop said I should have the flywheel too. Is this true? Problem is, the flywheel I'm planning to use is still in use on my '70!
Will balancing the assembly without the flywheel make that much of a difference? Oh, the engine is an ext balanced '87 454.
EDIT.. sorry, misread the last sentance of your post-- since your engine is external balanced, the flywheel might havean offset balance to it. what type of harmonic balancer are you using?
You definitely need a flywheel. The 454 is externally balanced. A alternative is to borrow a flywheel and use it for the balancing. This will get you very close but not perfect. Later You could also have them compare your old flywheel to the one used to do the balancing and they can then make your old flywheel equal the one used for balancing. I have done this a few time will good luck. I also bought a aluminum flywheel and replaced the old steel one. I did have them compare the aluminum to the steel and make it equal.
