Now that I have a rolling chassis, I am starting on the engine and I need some opinions on what type of cam to get. Here is what I am in the process of putting together:
383 with 5.7 inch rods/KB hyper pistons
GM vortech heads with 2.02/1.60 valves springs good to 0.500
performer RPM intake (most likely)
Holley 650 or 750 ( I have both)
1 5/8 headers
3:36 rearend
M20 4 speed
I have thought about a CC XE274 but really not sure. I will not drive this car much and street manners are not of too much of a concern. Most likely street only with occasional binges in the 6000+ RPM range.
I appreciate any thoughts you folks might have. Thanks
Cam sounds about rite......keep in mind those Vortec Heads are gonna require self-aligning rockers too....... I was gonna go the Vortec route 'cause the heads were so cheap, but by the time everything else got added up (Intake, rockers etc.) it was in the same range as a set of good heads. And has it ever been determined for sure that the Vortec set up will clear a stock vette hood? Had to trim the carb stud on my Weiand "Action Plus" and it still punctured the hood insulation..... GOOD LUCK!
I don't think that the vortechs are a problem with hood clearance it's the intake that usually causes the problem, this is something that I will have to give some consideration to with the performer RPM. I got a good deal on these heads they are new and machined for the larger valves and heavier springs and I was going to buy a new intake anyway so it was hard to pass up.
Thanks
I have almost the exact set up with the 274 cam and roller rockers 1.6 , I drive it daily no problems, currently 336 rear with 400 turbo auto, changing to 373 rear and to a 2004r trans. The engine pulls strong from 2600 right through 6000. Its not too big for the street, I might even go to a 284.
