I wanna go "Porting"
seriously, the question your asking is akin to asking, "if i put bigger wheels on, will i go faster?" we need much more information than what you have given. which engine do you have, L-48 or L-82 (or even LG4 :U )? are you changing the cam? if so, to what? are you changing the carb/intake? if so, to what? where do you want the power? do you want off the line, holeshot type power or 7000rpm kind of power? too many variables to say 'yes' or 'no' to the information you have given. having said that, the basics are in order. if all else is staying the same, i would think a true port and polish job on stock heads could actually hurt your performance.
L-48, i would think 'port matching' would be about all that is really benificial.
L-82, maybe a little more agressive work. port matching, unshrouding the valve and clean up the bowl.
full out, *****-to-the-wall small block with victor intake, demon 850, 11.5:1 C/R, roller this and roller that. then yeah, porting will make a difference.
porting and polishing can kind of be one of those 'black arts' that is hard to put your finger on. for a regular street engine that you port match or do some mild porting. will you see a gain? yeah, maybe. on a dyno. will you feel a gain? probably not.
my thoughts on it are, well, my thoughts are really irrelivant but you did ask. anyway, if your just driving the car on the street and you just like the feel of it pushing you back in the seat when you hit the gas, i think the cost-to-benifit ratio is not in favor. figure a cheap job at a machine shop will cost you about $200. for that money, i think you would get better, more tangable result from having the heads milled a little to increase the C/R. just my $.02. :chevy
