I'm assembling a 1998 block with vortec head. I was told that these spring would fit my vortec head without machining. I don't have my head to check it right now but after checking the dimension, I think it will.
Here is my question, which way do we put the spring? There is one end with a tapper. Is there different spring retainer on these spring than regular one?
Here's the picture, on the left a Z06 spring and on the right a 1998 vortec engine spring.
Now I get it. Great info from the ZO6 forum. Obviously, the tapper go up and you need a different retainer to fit the spring. The thing is that the Z06 valve use 8 mm valve so they are a little bit smaller than the one I have. If my keys fit the retainer than it's good. Otherwise I'll have to find another way.
I'll have to check at what height the coil bottom out because they're a little taller 2,20 inch versus 2,01''. My friend have a spring tester so I guess i'm gonna pay him a visit.
By the way, I just bought one spring to make some test. It would be great to fit good GM part without machining the vortec head. The base of the spring is almost the same size (0,875'' versus 0,850'', the ZO6 are 0,020'' smaller from the inside dia) so I'm pretty sure they fit. I'll check with the head in two days at the machine shop where they are.
If everything check ok, I'll order a retainer to check the fit.
