I am going to look at an uncut 1182 steel crank. the owner says it is nitrided. I know that 1182's came both ways. Is there any way to tell the difference? I heard that the nitrided cranks have a greenish look to them. Anyone know for sure.
Thanks
bob
If it's a nitrided crank, the un-ground surfaces (i.e. all but the rod and main
journals) will have a dark (greenish or blackish) appearance. Some cranks
more than others. If it's not be nitrided then, the counterweights, etc. will
be shiny steel (or brown from oil varnish buildup if it's not been cleaned).
