Does a 454ci BB engine fit smoothly into the C-4 Corvette closer to the 1984 model or is it so much of a difference that you need to move things around to make room for it? :jester :smash:
Re: How does a Big Block fit in a C-4? (Light84vette)
Smoothly, no but it will fit. The steering rack has to be moved forward enough to clear the crank pulley. The cradel needs to be notched to clear the oil pan. The a/c box needs to be replaced with one from a ZR1. And the firwall has to be modified by the brake booster, for the corner of the block and head. Other than that its a piece of cake. Its even easier to chang plugs in my big block than in my LT4.

What about the cross bar that goes across from the left to right that seems to connect the front suspension? it goes right in front of the engine theres only like and inch of clearence.

Yea there is only about 1 inch between the waterpump pulley and that cross bar. But it still fits..

If you moved the steering rack, which originally is in a straight line_____ then when you moved it was it out of alignment_-----_?Also can you post a Birds EYE pic of the engine in the car, to show how close it is to the front? :seeya

Alignment can be compensated with toe adjustment. Moving the steering rack forward will affect the Ackerman steering angle, to the negative side (I think) providing the tie rod locations are the same. Negative Ackerman can be helpful for high-speed cornering, but not ideal for low speed maneuvering, and will increase understeer. How much is the rack moved? Did you alter the tie rod joint radius accordingly? Did you alter steering ratio to compensate for the slower rate if the distance was increased?
Re: How does a Big Block fit in a C-4? (Light84vette)
The vetttes steering is now more responsive than before. I think it is due to the added 100lbs ( aluminum head big block only weighs 100lbs than a small block) . As far as the rack it is only in a straight line when the wheels are straight, but when turned they move forward. I just reversed the action. The rack is only 1/2 inch forward,so it did not change things all that much. The rack is never really in a straight line since steering and road conditions make the wheels move up and down, left and right. If the rack was always in a straight line you would'nt need tie rods. I'm not an engineer , I just like to have fun and do things that most won't. All I can say is the alignment went fine and it actually steers better at manuvering and high speed. Guess I got lucky!! :D

Hey Vetterestorer thanks for the info on the installation process of the big block in a C-4 Vette. Another thing how many cubes are you running and how much hp are you getteing out of the Engine? Also the Big block is not so much taller that it causes no problems for hood clearence or was it a problem? :D
Re: How does a Big Block fit in a C-4? (Light84vette)
It's making a little over 700 hp at 6700rpm without the 250 fogger  As for the hood, the injection would not clear so I added a cowl induction style 3" lift to the hood that looks sweet. Although am in the process in making another hood with a trans am ram air style to it, along with the rest of it's winter makeover. (this winter I hope)

Me like. Me want one. Gimme!
Sorry, you just appealed to my viking pillage the countryside part of my psyche with that one. Nice work. Does the extra weight hurt your handling?
