Default 2 bolt or 4 ?

Just wondering what opinions/experience is for how much HP a 2 bolt main with studs and forged crank might be able to take? Saw a roundy-round motor shortblock with nice parts but to my somewhat surprise still running 2 bolt 400 blocks.

I'd say something around 500-550 Hp for a built 2 bolt w/studs 6000rpm redline. Depends on the rpm range though

The 400 blocks with 4 bolt mains are known for cracking in the main webs! That is why most of the 400 blocks you see are either 2 bolts or splayed 4 bolts. The 400 4 bolt block was actually halted after only 18 months of production, mostly due to the cracking issue! 2 bolts are very strong and can support 500+hp no problem.

in the late 60's / early 70's a friend of mine raced a 68 302 Z-28 (2 bolt, small crank), granted the stroke was only 3", but that engine turned 8000-8500 (maybe even a bit more) for many many runs, never a problem. top end was built up to make enough HP to do the 1/4 in ~11.70. the only problem with drive train durability

I wonder if the 4 bolt 400 production was stopped more for the possibility that 4 bolts aren't necessary on that 'new' engine with the long stroke-meaning durability concerns weren't

How many engines die from main bearing failure from lack of rigidity...few I would say.

And that is why I just sourced a 4 bolt main LT1 block... :D Do as I say not as I do...:)
