Default options for a L98 replacement

a good buddy of mine has a roached L98 from a 91 vette. may have a cracked block, haven't pulled it yet but there is mucho coolant in the pan, and a "scope" of the cyl hole revealed a scored bore and potentially a damaged head.

he's looking for either a used/rebuilt L98. what is the best source, I'm familiar with Jaspers, but would like to get some other recommendations too.

will other chevy crate engines (long block) work OK??? I don't think the L98 is still avail in long block from GM, but maybe other places.

thanks!!!!

ZZ4 long block would work just fine, you can transfer the TPI over to it.

maybe from Scoggin-Dickey?

It's like the old saying goes, "how fast you want to go depend on how much money ya got."

lokking to spend around 4-5k, the zz4 is nice but probably overkill.

this gent is looking more for a stock replacement and croozin.

but, if he's like me, he'd be better off with the hot rod engine!!! the zz4 is VERY nice.

Does you're buddy live in an area that requires emission testing? If so and he goes with a souped-up crate engine, he'll likely be up the creek without a paddle.

If he is just into easy cruising, check the price on a stock replacment long block or look for a used engine from a another '91 Corvette.

http://www.sdpc2000.com/ has some nice crate motors.

A one picee rear main block wouldn't be hard to find used. Bore it over and have a trusted local shop rebuild it. You could also buy a ZZ4 shortblock and work the factory heads if needed.
http://www.moreperformanceinc.com also builds great motors but is most like more than what he wants.
