Interested in building 383 stroker and trying to budget.
I know I can buy a kit that includes all the internal goodies,
but what about the machine shop costs to bore out the block.
Re: Approximate costs to bore block for 383 stroker? (85vet)
85 vette station auto parts in cory will do bore hone hot tank cam bearings and freeze plugs for $325 -$350 if you call ask for ray tell him corky told you to call
Re: Approximate costs to bore block for 383 stroker? (85vet)
There is also some cost to clearance the rods for the deeper stroke. This also leads to mistakes sometimes at the machine shop when they poke into a water jacket.
Re: Approximate costs to bore block for 383 stroker? (85vet)
If your block doesn't NEED to be bored and your new pistons can fit with the proper clearance...save your money! The 5 cubic inches won't give you squat in terms of noticeable power. And your block will last longer cause it can still be bored oh thirty over next time...

Chris,
Are you telling me that you can use a 383 crank w/o boring out the
block?
Re: Approximate costs to bore block for 383 stroker? (85vet)
85vet: All a "383" crank is, is a 3.75 stroke crank, (which is what a 400 uses.) I think there is a difference in journal/bearing sizes, which is what an advertised 383 crank takes care of. A standard bore on the 350 is 4.000 and uses a 3.48 stroke crank. A 3.75 crank in a 4.000 block makes a 377 I beleive. When you bore it to 4.030 you get 383.
On my ~160k motor only one cylinder NEEDED to be bored out, the rest were fine. I got all 8 done for reason of something or other (call it what you want, but I just wantd it that way).
Check with the shop before you bore it, if you dont have too you might not want too. I wish I didnt have too, saying you have a 377 makes it more interesting then saying a 383 to me :p:
As a note, I spent about $1500 at the amchine shop, but that included all the machine work, assembly up to the heads, painting the block/intake, small parts (springs, retainers, etc), and that was through the best shop in town... I will try to dig out my receipt for better $'s
Re: Approximate costs to bore block for 383 stroker? (VetteRacer282)
stock sbc 400ci had 4.125" bore & 3.75" stroke ... main journal size approx 2.649".
stock sbc 350ci has 4.000" bore & 3.48" stroke ... main journal size approx 2.449".
Most 377ci use a 400 block & a 350 crank (w/main journal spacers) ... this combo can rev to relatively higher limits ... kinda like an old sbc DZ302 on steroids.
Most 383ci use a thirty over 350 block & either an old 400 crank w/ main journals turned down or a purpose-built aftermarket crank w/ same 3.75" stroke. Stock bore 350 block w/ 3.75 crank also makes 377ci.
Costs for machine work? Quite dependent on your choice of type/brand/quality of crank, rods & pistons:
Bore: budget $8 - $12/hole.
Clearancing BLOCK (that too) and rods: budget $100 - $300.
