From what I have heard, 0.030" is pushing it on a stock block unless you sonic check for core shift.
If you have $1500 freed up a Rocket block can go way out. :flag
There is a relatively wide range of material that can be removed from honing. For instance, it's not uncommon for the last .005" to be removed by honing whenever a block is rebored or piston fitted. Or a block can receive just enough of a hone to allow for proper ring seating. In this case, rather than allow the honing stones to actually contact the bore, the honing head may be wrapped with fine grit sandpaper. This results in very minimal material removal, barely measurable, but enough to allow the rings to seat.
As stated above, the other consideration on stretching a 400SB is the application. I know guys running .040" over, but its not their EDD nore does it see high temps or revs...... :yesnod:
Re: Max overbore for SB 400? (ALLTHROTTLE&NOBOTTLE)
Do the right thing, and get it sonic checked!. For performance applications, most engine builders like at least .175", preferably more. It may help to do a partial block fill to support the bores if you are on the low side. I did, and it had no effect on engine temps.
