Default Question about Trick Flows

Which of the heads would be better for low end torque?

23* or G2

TIA

I used the G2's on my 79, I have no experience with the 23* but I have to say that I'm pushing some series power with mine!

you know, I would lean towards the G2's. The G2's are "quench" type, which if memory serves aids in combustion efficiency and curbing detonation; and I get slightly better results from DD2000 via the way it differentiates between the wedge and regular 23* heads (who knows if the DD2K is overtly optimistic or if the G2's will actually work better). Interpreting their respective descriptions on trickflow's website, they seem to be of the disposition that the 23* promote more torque "without sacrificing HP," and the G2's are the other way around. Ultimately it will depend on your setup, but there's something to be gained by calling TF up and asking!

If it's any consolation, I'm looking at the G2s for my 383.

I have 23 degrees that have served me fine for a couple years. My buddy put the same heads on his mini-rammed 383, at the same time I bought mine. One of his cracked, they replaced it under warranty. Awhile later the other one dropped a seat outa the valve and it wrecked his engine. They replaced his broken engine parts and bought the heads back from him. He didn't want to have their heads any more. He took the money they gave him back for the heads and bought AFR 210's. It cost him the labor and time without his car. I don't think I would buy another set of Trick Flow's just because I don't want to risk going through what he went through. But, like I said, mine have been working fine so far.

I have the 23d heads on my Xfire. HAd them for the last 2 years. I believe they are the "best bang for the buck heads available", including the Vortecs. I originally considered the G2 heads but was put off them by several who had used them. The early ones apparently had quality problems and bad guides. Also the issue of getting the valvetrain geometry correct was another issue. The results I have gotten are excellent. They seem to handle whatever mods I throw at them and they just keep generating more power. For a Xfire, they work great and help put down over 430lbft of torque.

I have had a pair of 23s on my 327 since summer 2001 and they are great. Lost NO low end torque and it pulls better on top end. If you are thinking of putting them on a FI car, let me know.

I had the 23's on my first motor. They were mildly ported and polished. Flow is important but it isn’t everything. The Intake to exhaust port efficiency and the combustion chamber efficiency were excellent. I ran 11:1 compression with 92 octane pump gas and only needed 34 degrees total timing to achieve 475HP/435TQ. I think the Trick Flow 23 heads are a very good head for the money. The G2’s will need special pistons or will need to be fly cut for higher lift cams since the intake valve is canted. Here are the 23 degree numbers:
http://www.stingraycrazy.com/custom.html

Tested on a SuperFlow flow bench @ 28”H20

Intake Ported / Exhaust Ported
0.050 - 32 cfm / 0.050 - 23 cfm
0.100 - 65 cfm / 0.100 - 49 cfm
0.200 - 134 cfm / 0.200 - 112 cfm
0.300 - 198 cfm / 0.300 - 140 cfm
0.400 - 242 cfm / 0.400 - 180 cfm
0.500 - 256 cfm / 0.500 - 202 cfm
0.600 - 267 cfm / 0.600 - 216 cfm

Another good choice would be the Canfield heads. The flow numbers are very good.

I have a set of G2s they are a real pain to set up correctly but they make power from idle up because of the small intake runner volume.

I didn't know that about the G2's... Think I'll go 23* just for easier install.

No FI, just a rebuilt and tuned q-jet

63FI- I just installed the 23* heads on my 85 L98. Very nice head for the money, bolted right on, no hassles, drilled for all accesories. Waiting on the chip for the car and I will be doing a dyno pull in about 2 weeks, I'll keep you posted.

Tomcat,

I'll be interested in hearing about whether your experience with these heads is the same as what I have gotten. I think you'll be very pleased.

Im currently running the older style(g2) heads on my camaro, i am very happy with them, and the car runs high 11's low 12's with a very basic combo....the biggest problem thou is you cant run more then 10-1 without special pistons, and you are limited on the lift of the cam....for my new engine i just built i used the 23 degree heads,,,i spoke to the people at trick flow and they told me they have stopped making the orig twisted wedge design due to the the issues i mentioned above,,,also he said that the g2 design only make 10-12 more hp then the regular 23 degree setup....i havnt got the new engine running yet but ill post some #'s once i do......either way i dont think you can go wrong, they are great heads

I'm going with the 23* heads, but now the question is get the cnc ones or not... the price is like 150-200 more for the cnc ones. i'm not sure if it's worth it or not.

I was JUST looking at the website today, and the CNC'd heads seem to flow a bit better, especially at higher valve lift.

Lift Value (in.) Cast l CNC Chamber Option
Intake Flow ExhFlow l Intake Flow Exhaust Flow
---------------------------l-----------------------------------------------------
CFM CFM l CFM CFM
0.100 50.6 57.9 l 64.2 55.9
0.200 135.8 98.3 l 138.5 105.2
0.300 191.0 136.4 l 197.7 145.5
0.400 229.7 162.9 l 237.1 170.7
0.500 253.1 176.9 l 256.8 186.3
0.600 254.3 189.6 l 258.4 195.9

sorry about the chart, but I lose my spacing on posting....

The CNC'd TFS 23's will make up to 17 more HP is what I hear

These heads come with the best valve job I have seen in a aftermarket sub 1k a pair small block head. I really like them FWIW.
They have a pretty good lip where the intake seat is machined and set in,it creates some turbulance " the bad kind " but for the most part they run fine right out of the box but of course some additional port work will see a gain. They have a a really good D-Port exhaust

Neat heads that will get a job done for most street strip needs and the price is right as well imo

Moutainmotor,

When I got mine, I pulled one of the valves to see if there was anything to be gained from a pocket port. Didn't look like it to me. Any thoughts?
And the valve job, as you described looked excellent. Are you thinking the intake valve could be "unshrouded" further? Anthing else you'd mod on these heads. I realize that after a while, more flow may or may not mean anything or the size motor you have. At a stock block 350, I thought the 195cc runners were plenty. I was pleasantly surprised that the "largish" runner still promoted excellent low end mixture velocity. My motor pulls from 1400rpm on up, no problemo. :chevy
