I was reading an article in PHR's engine special (I belive it was called "the other 350's") and I have became intersted in an oldsmobile block. In the article it mentioned about converting the diesel 350 block into a gas motor, boring out the motor almost .100 " etc, etc, and you would have yourself a small block 440. Dis anybody else see this, and do you know of a place that converts diesels to gas powered? The article didn't mention any names, only that some companies did the conversions.
I thought that that would be a pretty cool engine swap when my 350 bites the bullet.
A true Olds 350 is completely different from a small block chev. Bellhousing, mounts, exhaust, acessories,ec t. I wouldn't recommend it. Just build a bigger small block chev.
i have not seen the article but they may be talking about the "rocket block" which is a small block chevy race block cast by olds. this block is used by most engine builder that want a 400+ cu in chevy

I've heard lots of old people talking about this. I didn't know you could go that big, but the diesel blocks are commonly used for hi performance motors. They are much stronger.
Well, I'm a few times 18 years old, so you can put me in the "old people" catagory.
For sure, what has been said above about the Olds 350 Diesel block is true, it is a great foundation for a 440+/- cube race engine. The Olds 350 Diesel block is NOT the Rocket block, the Rocket block is something altogether different. However, it is the Rocket block based engine that will fit in your 'Vette - the Olds Diesel 350 is strictly custom fab to install in a 'Vette.
This man knows what he's talking about. One of these days I'll save enough $$$ up and make one of those HUGE small blocks. But man they get expensive. I was planning on the 434 at first, but I downsized to a 408 due to head flow. I don't have enough flow to support that big motor. My 408 should still be pulling at 7000, a similar 434 would quit at 5500. The torque would be unreal, but completely useless in a street car.
I'm a big fan of Olds motors. I have 2 455's in storage right now. The diesel to gas conversion buildup can be expensive, but you will have a stout motor.
The best Olds website I've seen yet is www.442.com
Good tech and FAQ section, along with the diesel conv.
