Default Advice on L82 Mods (removing)

Hi
I have a 73 Vette, L82 4-Sp that the original owner threw a bunch of performance mods on about 5 years ago that I plan in the future to remove. He had the foresight to keep all the original parts he pulled off and I have all of that as well.

What he added;

1) Holley 1850 Carb manual choke (600 CFM)
2) Eldelbrock Victor Jr Intake (single plane)
3) World Products Sportsman Heads
4) COMP Cams Xtreme Energy CL 12-246-3 / Duration at 050 inch Lift: 230 int./236 exh. / Intake Valve Lift: 0.490 int./0.490 exh. / Lobe Separation (degrees):110

The engine has no idle manners due to the cam choice and is very cold blooded. I'm sure the single plane intake he chose also doesn't play well into all this.

While I'm waiting (planning) for the engine pull to happen to put everything back to OEM stock I'm looking for some low hanging fruit I might try and was wondering if putting the original cast iron intake and Q-Jet Carb back on would be worth trying to clam things down a bit. It's an easy afternoon swap and at this point all I'm out is a set of intake gaskets.

Any thoughts on this approach?

Dennis

The Sportsman 1's have been discontinued for a long time I think. The Sportsman 2's have a 200CC runner, which is part of your troubles (assuming the 1's are the same). Ditching the Vic Jr. will help, providing the Q-jet is up to snuff. Time and gaskets are cheap, just be sure to make sure the heat tubes/crossover are in place to help with cold startup and drive-ability.

Id leave the heads, change the cam to a isky 270 mega cam...its a hair smaller than the stock cam but makes plenty more torque
Sounds good but has good manners will idle all day long.. Should work fine with your Qjet

I would replace intake first. The victor jr is large part of your troubles.. I suggest an aluminum 2 plane performer RPM or similar depending on hood clearance. Intake can come with square, spread bore and dual carb flanges.The Holley will need checked out power valve jets and secondary spring. Then tuned. The Q jet canbe rebuilt and used also.
