Any of you engine builders/machine shops have experience with the Scat 9000 series or Eagle cast steel ESP cranks and Scat 4340 I beam or Eagle I beam 5140 rods? These parts aren't much more than having the OEM parts machined. For a street engine are they enough better to justify the additional expense?
Dan,I'll probably get flamed for this but there is no point sending a boy on a man's job.....putting the best you can sensibly afford in an engine usually works out best in the long run....i am sure someone will say that they have 600 hp reliably out of a two bolt block with Autozoneparts and no- name no -brand components....... I have Eagle 4340 crank with 4340 H beam 6" rods with short skirt lt weight SRP pistons in my 74R 383....VERY happy with it.....john :chevy ;)

I have yet to be disappointed when using quality products but I have when taking "short cuts".
Eagle and Scat seem to be comparable. It looks like both are cast/forged in China and shipped to the usa for machining. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
One machine shop I talked to prefered Scat over Eagle. I was just trying to get input from other engine builders or machinists that have dealt with both.
Dan,the eagle crank was internally balanced and took a little machine time to exactly true it prior to installation...no big deal but always something to check prior.....i never rely on anything being exactly right straight out of the box....it takes little time and little effort to make sure it is right before installing....I'd rather do it once right......inspired laziness i guess...john ;) :chevy
If you go to the Scat web site you can get some ifo on the difeferences in the trensil strength of the different cranks, as for Scat or Eagle, I can imagine why there would be a substantial difference other than cost and many many people here have the Scat 9000 uless they got a good deal on a Forged crank
My builder uses Eagle casue thats where he gets his best pricing, but would use Scat if I requested.
It all goes back to goals, stock cranks are good to 6500 RPM, so how much will you spin?
I wasn't planning to turn it to 6500 rpm. Probably closer 6K.
Around here to turn a crank is close to $100. Scat or Eagle cranks are around the $200 mark. ARP rod bolt are around $50 then to resize the rods is about another $90. Eagle/Scat rods are around that magical $200 mark.
My thoughts are that to upgrade to the better rods and crank is only $200 more.
I will be putting the 5140 Eagle Forged rods in and have a stock 400 crank,,, but go to this site for a better understading of the tensil strength of the given forgings. http://www.scatcrankshafts.com/newslawone02.html
Dan, I think the two are comparable in quality. I have seen ProLine cranks and rods advertised that are American made I think. But I have not been able to find any additional info on them. Flatlander Racing carries ProLine

I had been to the Scat web site. Lots of interesting information.

Scat and Eagle do seem to be comparable.
It looks like the Scat 9000 Series cranks have a knife edge profile on the counter weights and Eagle cast steel cranks don't.
Scat cranks have a full .125 fillet radius on all journals for strength. Eagle doesn't and claims that special (high dollar) bearings are needed for the larger radius. Hmmm!
I've talked to more than one engine builder that prefers even the base model Eagle rods for the BBC over the current production GM HD rod. The same goes for Scat rods (better than GM). Better = lighter, stronger, more likely to stay together at high RPM's.
I hated to go to the Imports, but it's a $$ issue. Not just the cost of the rods (which are a bargain!)..... but consider the cost to recover if one fails at 7000 revs?!?!? :cry

My eagle crank has the thin profile weights also has 125 radius and all radius cranks require the hd bearings. I have had no problems with mine in three years use but my engine is never stressed. :blueangel:
