I know some of you already are running the 200-4R trans swap. Art Carr has their trans and billet converter on sale (about $900 off), so I'm seriously thinking of getting one now and stashing it away till the rest of the car is ready. Anyone have experience with the Art Carr trans? My first choice would normally be the PTS setup, but for 1/3 off the Carr setup sure seems woth looking into.
Hey GregP, I've been following your project. Sweeeeet!
I've been thinking of putting a TH-200-4R tranny in my '67 pickup. Do you have a link to the sale on the tranny that you're talking about?
Art Carr has been in business a long time, but there is something strange going on. There seems to be "two" Art Carr trans companies. One claims to be "the Real One". From what I can gather, Art Carr sold his company at some point in the past and is now getting back into it.
I know that he (the Real One?) put a built 700R4 behind a 454 in a '90 454SS pickup back before they killed off the 454SS. It stood up really good - according to the magazines.
I like the ratio spread on the 200-4R better than in the 700R4.
Thanks, GregP. Seriously, I wasn't imagining the "two companies" thing. But, now that I go hunting for the link to the "other one", I can't find one. artcarrtransmissions.com doesn't work.
Anyway, I think that I might be trying that tranny out. It looks like a pretty good deal.
Bowtieoverdrives.com has a 200-4R website, but it's under construction. They do have a 200-4R availabel, but it looks to be a low-HP model at just under $900.
Anybody else know a good, reasonable source for TH-200-4R trannys?
There really are two Art Carr Transmission shops. I have dealt with the "Real Art Carr" several times in the past, they are local to me in Huntington Beach CA, and I would recomend them to anyone. Their website, http://www.artcarrtransmissions.com ,appears to have a router problem, here is a link to their phone number and address: http://www.smartpages.com/home/artcarrtransmission1
When there was only one Art Carr transmission shop in the world it was even closer to my house, and yes it was in Fountain Valley.
Art Carr retired and sold that shop, the new market seeking owner moved the shop a couple of times.
I suppose the best way to describe how there came to be two Art Carr Transmission's would be to say that Art Carr himself grew weary of the people complaining to him about the new owners and quality issues. He really did not need money, he went back in business so that he could once again feel that the highest quality was associated with the Art Carr name.
I bought a "super built will handle 600 h/p no problem everything is the best" 700r4 from the Texas Art Carr 2 years ago. At that time I think it was the only Art Carr. It cost me $2600. It lasted all of 5000 miles in my under 500 h/p car. I realized I wouldn't be able to keep a 700r4 together so I spent a little more and put in the th400/Gear Vendors combo. This is the only way to go. You should consider it. It is way better than trying to find a 4 speed auto that will stay together. I have a page on my web site with a little info on the install but it won't help you a whole lot with a mid-year. Two other bits of info. This is the setup that Calloway put into the twin turbo c4's that ordered the auto tranny, a $6700 option back then. This is also the same tranny setup that was used in the car that got 2nd overall in the One Lap of America last year, a '63 Grand Sport replica tube frame kit car with a built up big block.
Yes, it's not looking so good for the "sale" transmission. Guess I'll have to save my pennys and get the PTS one, which I'm quite confident in.
The TH400/gear vendors would be a no go in my car as it's too long. I don't have much of a drive shaft left now, and with the solid axle I need the travel which an IRS 'Vette would not.
