Getting ready to start the install of a TRemec TR3550 5speed OD tranny into my 78. I have been hunting for a take down slip yoke that will fit this transmission. Unlike the T56 and the TKO, this trans has a Ford C4 output shaft (i.e. 28 spline) - everyone and their uncle has a take down yoke that fits the TKO and T56 - But I have yet to find anyone that makes a yoke that can be disconnected from the Driveshaft.
My last thought was Forte's, however I just got an e-mail from another forum member telling me that the Forte's yoke fits the TKO only - (i.e. 31 spline)
My questions are:
1. is this true?
2. has anyone else out there installed a TR 3550 in their C3?
3. If so where did you get the yoke.?
Re: Tremec TR3550 swap - am I buggered? (71roadster)
Also try Mark Williams. Do a web search. If nothing else, I am sure the could modify a yoke for you. Pretty simple so it shouldn't be to much $$$.
Chris
I have Mark Willaims presently putting together an estimate for a one-off yoke. although this will probably be quite expensive.
As to the other question "Why do i need a break down yoke?" The crossmember that the pinion cushion attaches to goes under the rear connection of the driveshaft - making it impossible to dissconnect the pinion u-joint and then dropping the tail end of the shaft and pulling out of the tranny - it is mandatory that both ends of the drive shaft be able to be dissconnected from their respective yokes.
I need to inestigate this also, since I'll be converting to a 5 speed from a 350 auto later this year.
By the way, I have always been able to remove the drive shaft with the trans in place. I remove the crossmember, then have the trans on a jack to move around as needed (still connected to block). I then use a 1/4 inch drive with about 2 or 3 extensions that goes parallel to the drive shaft and allows me to remove the bolts at the pinion.
Now with both from and rear disconnected I can move the trans enough to pull the drive shaft out. I'm sure this has probably been tried.
