Default Cam Degreeing?

Whenever I installed the 294S in my 454 I did not degree the cam, I merely installed it "straight up." I will be changing to a larger Crane cam this summer, should I degree it in? Am I missing out on any horsepower by not degreeing my cam in? I have been told both yes I am missing out on power and no I'm not missing out on any power...I would really like to clarify this.

My other question is this. With Desktop Dyno 2000 I can advance and retard the cam timing. Will Desktop Dyno 2000 give me an accurate reading as to whether I need to install the cam advanced or retarded?

Thanks

I think that it is very rare these days that a cam is delivered to your door with specs other than what it says on the cam card. So i just throw on the degree wheel to verify that it's what it says it is. It's just a check.

You might run some simulation on DD2000 and see what they say the best installed degrees is. If it ever shows up I order a Comp cams custom SR ground straight up and 112 lobe centers. They typically grind in 4 degrees of advance. so you would have to install it 4 degree retarded to get it back to straight up

Shane I always always degree a cam. I have never never found one out. I have screwed up putting the timming chain on when it has many options for advance and retart.
It is very simple to degree a cam and if you get into engine building you should buy a degree wheel and hopefully you already have a dial indicator.
When it comes time to degree post here and some of us can walk you through it.
I would install the way the card reads. I know this cam and installed it the way the card said. I degree it to verify that I have everything right not to try and improve on the factory specs.

I would and I will degree a cam. It's not that hard and you are sure of the cam spec.

About dyno 2000, a issue of Chevy high per. tried to retard a comp cam XE268 and it didn't gave more hp. I ran a similar set up on dyno 2000 and it turned out the same result. I would believe the accuracy of dyno 2000 as to tell or not if a change in cam timing give more hp.(or loose torque)
