It's been a month waiting and cussing comp cams all the way.
Billet steel extreme ramps. Custom cam .620 lift my rockers. Carbon fiber distib gear required and my Crane cams Pro lifters in the picture. I have to use Flatout Racing copper head gaskets to get my .041 quench right
I screwed up my last SR cam with oil restrictors to the top end and to much spring pressure for street and race driving. My last cam was a Crane billet SR with .635/.644 lift with @ 195# closed and #560 open with Dart 227cc 2.08/1.625 valves. DD2000 puts my motor at @ 580 hp.
Looks nice. What is the duration, and your "new" spring pressures?
Did you choose to go with the billet cam/composite distrib gear instead of having an iron gear put on the cam, or does COMP not offer iron gears? The Crane SR I'm planning has the iron cam gear, so I can run a normal distributor gear. I must say the composite distributor gear does sound like it has solved the pia syndrome of having to run a bronze gear with the billet cams.
Greg with 1.5 rockers the .050 is 238/244 with .377 & .381 112 lobe center.
I hate Comp Cams and I hope that nobody buys anything from them in the future. They lie to you. They have things in their catolog that they don't have. They have poopie customer service. I ordered this cam on March 6th with a speyach about how I was going to have it in 5 working days. Well 10 phone calls later and I got it on April 9th and its not what i originally ordered.
Mike - Carbon fiber is the new thing to use with none sleeved cam gears.
Tim - I have to get this car running. This Sat is a Test and tune day!:)
I'm glad to hear you finally got your cam. I still can't believe the run around they gave you, it's just so different than my dealings with them. Regardless, I'm sure your just happy to be done with it.
I've had the composite distributor gear since last fall, but haven't installed it yet. I might do that tonight, I've got to pull the distributor anyway, I've got an annoying oil leak between the distributor and intake manifold. A new gasket and a little silicone should fix that....
Are those Flatout gaskets the new one's with the nitrile coating?
I'm not buying anything from comp again. Why did you choose the vertical bar style rocker brace rather than the spring loaded horizontal style. I was thinking about getting lifters like that but I'm not sure they're always reliable. Is there a way to machine an older block to accept non retrofit new style roller lifters and spider?
my recommendation would be to return those composite gears. I had the composite gear on my billet cam motion solid roller cam. After a few hundred miles I pulled the distributer.....and the gear was "chewed" up. It was not broken...but the actual teeth were not smooth anymore.....I was very dis-satisfied. I put the brass gear back in....no problems.
inqbus383 Crane cams gives you a trade in deal. So i got these Crane pro's for $340 instead of the summit racing price of $539 or something like that.
RedVette racing - The race shop that redid my heads said that it was just bad luck on my part as to why the roller bearing failed. I had .060 Steffs oil restrictors to the top end. I drilled them out to .112 So I hope that it doesn't happen again. I use 10W30 mobil1 syn. The race shop does lots of circle track cars doing 8000 rpm and they said that my light weight valves only need 160-165# I went with new 170 lbs closed at my installed height. They are good till .720 lift
an update: I had a few problems on the rebuild. Comp cams sent me a 1.050 base circle cam instead of the ordered .900 inch. So the valve train roller rocker tips don't hit the center of the valve anymore. I have to go down and buy a new set of .080 wall 7.900 inch push rods. No big deal, but it's just another $140 to make some cam work that they promised me in 5 days March 6 th and i just got it on April 10th with lot's of phone calls.
Also instead of a $300 dollar billet cam I was charges $394 with a carbon fiber dist. gear and now new push rods wher my old $140 8.00 inch ones don't work anymore.
Time and time again on this forum I hear of flat cams and other BS from Comp Cams. I would say that we should spread the word that this company is just bad.
Sorry to hear about all the problems. Hope you get it all worked out real soon. I received my custom crane cam in about 3 weeks. They say to use 165 lb. springs as well, but my lift is only .600 in. Sounds like you've got an even meaner ramp rate.
I wonder if you Crane cam is nearly identicle to my old cam. I was able to get the bigger lift numbers using 1.65 intake and 1.6 exhaust. Could you take a picture of it?
Gkull- I would call them and give them a very large peice of your mind. That's what I didn when I got back from the dyno with the cam they reccomended me. The cam was way out in left field, and my motor only made 500hp while falling on its face at 5600RPM.
I told them that I was fed up with their crap and that I was spread the word about their crappy cams. I told them that I wanted a new cam for free to make up for their screw-up. They told me how they couldn't do it because it cost $300. Then I told them that I had just spent $500 on the dyno to find out that they had sent me the wrong cam!
They agreed to a new cam, and I told them all the specs this time to grind it to. I received it 3 days later.
My buddy and I went right down the lobes with my home made adjustable piston stop. My lobes and lifts were what i ordered.
I have ask them to give me a set of the 7.900 inch .080 wall push rods and if they want I'll send them my 8.000. I'm not holding my breath for the Brown truck so I just went down to Summit racing and bought Crane cams push rods. They are probably made by the same manufacturer and they are $30- $40 cheaper
