Default [Motor question] 420 cubes

I am more than likely going to have my 383 removed this fall and it'll be replaced with a 420 cube short block. 4.155X3.875 are the dimensions. It'll retain my heads, cam and intake manifold.

I don't want to break the bank like I did with my 383..and was wondering since this, like my 383 doesn't rev past 5800-6000 if I could get away with a nodular crank..BUT use good pistons and rods. Compression will also stay at 11:1.

I won't be upping the HP numbers that much, but torque should have a significant increase which always makes for more fun and sotp feel.

All feedback is welcome.

Jay,
Have you found someone that grinds a 3.875 cast crank?
I haven't ever seen one listed, just curious.

maybe http://www.flatlanderacing.com has one. When I was searching for 3.875's I was able to find budget forgings made out of 5140 or something like that. I've also found some sub $500 4340 forgings.

JD, ck out the guys at Competition Products 800-233-0199, you should be able to get a Callies Dragon Slayer Forged crank for about $700.00 if that fits your budget. Good Luck

I see ld85 beat me to it

VETDRMS - I had one of those type cranks in a 393 ci. You really have to do the motor as a package. If you have a decked block that smaller amount of stroke is used to get the piston and gasket to get the correct quench.

IMO - The only way to build a motor is internally balanced and as long a rod as practicle.

gkull - I'm really not sure what your refering too regarding the package?...
I am building a 406 at the moment using an internally balanced crank with 6" H-Beams and SRP Flat Tops. The quench height will be .049" with my .010" deck height. Is that 3.875 crank from scat externally balanced?

Default [Motor question] 420 cubes

Just an update:

It looks like the short block will be a bit above my limit. The 383 will come out of my car in the fall, and receive a full check over and what it needs it'll have done.

Thanks!

Don't know what your budget is. bill Mitchell offers 415/427 small block Chevy short blocks with forged crank, rods and pistons internal balance for $4600.00 plus shipping. Doug Herbert Speed at 800-444-7373 in a Motown block, a nice feature

VETDRMS - :nonod: SCAT makes a 9000 series 3.850" Crank,

I bought an externally ballanced 391 - 393 ci short rod motor. I think it had 5.65 rods TRW forged pistons. total junk!

What I was trying to say is; you have to get a stroke, rod, piston hieght to make your quench height correct with what ever your block is machined to.

I just went from a perfect setup with .038 head gaskets to a standard block blue printed. Then all the sudden my JE pistons with 6 inch rods were .020 down in the hole. so I had to buy .021 head gaskets to get me back to .041 quench

Ohio Crankshaft makes a 434 short block for $3495. unassembled or for $200 more they will assemble it.
It contains a Motown block, 4340 4" crank, JE pistons, internal balance, 6" rods, rings, bearings. They are new
to me so I don't know what there reputation is like.
Ohio Crankshaft: 1-800-333-7113 or visit their website @ OhioCrank.com
For you big block boys they also make a 555 to 588 ci. short block for $4100. assembled

That price sounds very cheap to me, the motown block is about 2K itself.
