I was watching Dream Car garage or some show where they are rebuilding an L88, and they pulled off the valve covers and there was something in there that didnt look right and they called it some kind of girdle, but i dont have the slightest idea on what it does and why you need it?
Bearcat - All your rocker studs should be in alignment before you mount the rocker arms. so you should be able to put a staight edge of metal like a ruler straight down the line.
Then when you install the rocker arms and screw them down to lash. the spring torque will start to bend the studs with deflection. If the studs are moving back and forth from the opening of the valve more than .035-.040 you need a stud girdle.
.040 doesn't sound like much. but just picture where the roller tip is no longer centered on your valve tip. Your guides suffer and in the case of aluminum heads your working the threads and the stud metal will fatigue in time
