Default revving small block strokers

just out of curiosity. i know it is a strange poll... but i am curious! just got back from a "run" with a few of the local chevy owners. found two of them running forged crank 383's that revved the motor up to ~8 K! is it just me or is this abuse for even a well built stroker with a forged rotating assembly?

edit: yes its another stupid poll :p:

Sounds like "bench racing" to me. You know, bragging (exaggerating) about how big the last fish they caught was or how hot their last date was. In reality, if they have a street Chevy engine that needs 8k to make power they have a problem :).

thats what i would think... seems they built a motor better suited for the track not the street. i did manage to catch a ride in a chopped coupe... the guy almost ran it to 8k... just a notch under. to be honest it did pull pretty hard from about 3500 to wherever he shifted, but i would never do that to my motor :nonod:

That simply depends on the cam. You don't go over the point where the cam is producing power.

5700.
It's hard to trust a H cam over 6000.
Years ago my friend Dave Eckman gave me a ride in his 55 283 with solids and he shifted at 8,000.

My stock bottom end L46 has been to 7K a number of times. I have run a lot of cams, but one of them REALLY liked the 4-7K range, so I would hit 7k now and then. I never had a problem, but I did switch to a more streetable cam for other reasons, and shifting at a lower RPM makes me feel a little more comfortable. :D

Considering mine's got a tuned port in an IROC Camaro, 5500 is about the limit. But the torque is wonderful, it doesn't need the R's.
The motor's just waiting for a future 383 build up.

Okay sorry guys...back to Corvettes. :D

I revved my L46 to 6000 at least a dozen times every time I drove it. After I warmed up the motor with angle plug heads, a 140 factory solid cam, crossram intake with 2 650 Holley dp's, 6500 to 7000 became the new shift point. What a geat motor that was! The L88 that replaced it had mighty big expectations to fill. It did!

Chuck

p.s. I use the same shift points with the L88

5700 - I don't trust the lifters, nor do I trust the initial adjustment I did on them when I built the motor :nono:

I don't think there is anything wrong with doing it if your motor is set up for it and it continues to make power in that range. If if you think about it even a 383 bore/stoke is well undersquare.

If you don't trust the initial adjustment, why not readjust them? Of course it's a moot point if your engine's power peaks well before your 5700 limit. I've run many stock hydraulic flat tappets to 6,200 without a problem and with aftermarket springs, I've gone past 6,800 without any problems.

My 74R 383 runs cleanly to 6500 as shift point, with max 7200......with a 700R4 and 3.08 i have autocrossed it entirely in second gear on shorter tracks....even in 1/4 mile it is just into 3rd at the end at 110 mph..john :chevy ;)

It know its not much of an issue with manual transmissions. But I thought that 700r4's don't like to see that high an rpm. The front pumps are just not built to handle it.. Am i wrong ?

With the trans in The D position and shifting on its own it will upshift at about 5k on its own. Sometimes I do it manually and I hold it out till 5500. The cam doesnt make much after that.

Accidentally went to about 5900/6000 once on my superramed 355 using sealed power hyperuetectic pistons. Here is one of the pistons' wrist pin bosses  :smash:
the computer chip had a higher than stock rev limit.

dman535,my 700r4 was completely stripped and rebuilt non stock, the builder guarantees it will easily hold 600hp,i only have about 340 rwhp and 420rwtq so there shouldnt be a problem.....john
