Installed my custom cam flawlessly. Installed the Total Seal rings on the TRW forged piston flawlessly and popped 'em in the block without a problem arising. Now while doing the timing set I noticed a small problem: The cam is hitting the GM 4340 rod. I had the cam custom ground per recommendations from my local speed shop and Mr. Crower. I can't believe this is happening!
427Hotrod, yeah everything was going sooo smoothly. While installing the timing set (crankshaft keys; sprockets etc....), went to turn the camshaft...OOooops! Darn thing would only turn about 270*!!! Then I uttered some faul language and got a chair to sit in. I couldn't believe it. The GM specs (and the expert GM parts manager) indicated nothing relating to an interference between cam and rod. Oh well, live and learn. :banghead: ______Yes, its a GM bowtie 4340 rod with 7/16 bolts into the rod______
Just a thought GRX. Are you sure you had the cam lined up correctly? I've cleared some really nasty cams compared to yours. Stroker cranks require a little effort if you're not using rods like (most H-beams).
.209/.217 @.050 doesn't strike me as something you could have problems with. But then again this is just my opinion! Lets us know what you find out.
Kelvin,
The GM Performance book states these rods are supposed to clear a non-stroker situation, such as mine. So you may have a point. I never set the timing chain up and then turned the motor. I just turned the the cam to simply check thye rotation, and boom...it hit the crank. I'll check then, as you suggested, by setting up with the timing chain and then rotating. TIA
If everything else is fine, I'd either get a small base circle cam or have the cam you've got re ground for clearance. Why mess with the rods if they'll have to be pulled ground and rebalanced? Cam change would be easier.
But that's just my 2 cents.
